Aussie Bird Count

Calling all twitchers, birders, ornithologists and budding bird buffs!!

Next week we’re taking part in Australia’s biggest citizen-science event, the Aussie Bird Count as we join the tens of thousands of Australians who will spend just 20 minutes counting the birds around them.

I’ve participated in the Aussie Bird Count for many years, and it’s been a wonderful way to deepen my interest and knowledge of birds as well as my appreciation of natural world. This is one reason why I’m inviting all students to join Mrs Ramsay of the Science Department and myself as our departments join at recess for 20 minutes of birdwatching. No experience is needed, though the ability to discriminate a rainbow lorikeet from sulphur crested cockatoo is helpful.

By participating, you’ll help create a snapshot of the birdlife in our playground and be part of a national movement that celebrates and is concerned for the feathered friends we share our environment with.

And it doesn’t stop at school, why not get involved at home too? This is a great opportunity for families to discover and record the birds that share your home.
