Grade 1-6 Clay

All the clay pieces were fired over the holidays. It took four kiln fires to complete everyone's work and most pieces were successful, minus a missing ear or two! The children were so excited to return to school and see their work laid out on the table.

The beginning of Term 4 has been busy with little artists painting their work and finishing it with a gloss. The Grade 3-6 work will be uploaded as a portfolio task soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

Prep

The Prep students have begun a weaving unit. This week we viewed the work of First Nation's weaving artists, Yolŋu artist Rosemary Gamajun Mamuniny and Quandamooka artist Elisa Jane Carmichael. These women shared their stories about learning from their elders and "waking up" weaving practices that had been "sleeping", we talked about how weaving has been practiced for tens of thousands of years and there is something incredibly familiar about using our hands in this way.

We headed outside and talked about respecting natural resources and not taking more than we need. We looked for invasive and fallen plants to pick. We then wove them onto the fence near the OSHC building.

Grade Four Sound Suits

Nick Cave’s Soundsuits are wearable sculptures made from colourful materials like buttons, beads and even toys. He first created them as a way to express himself and to hide his identity after seeing unfair treatment in the world, turning sadness into something powerful and creative. They are designed to be loud and to move freely, encouraging people to speak up and ensure their voices are heard. The Soundsuits show how art can explore identity and use symbolism to share feelings, stories and hope.

The students did an OUTSTANDING job when creating these!

Here are some finished pieces.
