Classroom News

We hope you enjoy reading about what has been happening in our Early Childhood and Primary School classes.

Kindergarten

The Kindergarten classes had a wonderful week learning about the police as part of our inquiry into emergency services. On Tuesday we were delighted to have Sergeant Clifford and Cadet Grace (Wilson, 2024) visit our classes to talk all about their special jobs! We got to try on lots of different types of police hats and jackets. They have very special uniforms. Next, we went outside and Sergeant Clifford taught us all how to cross the road safely. Finally, the highlight: getting to see the lights and hear the sirens of the police car and climb all through it! We were given a police hat and stickers to take home. We had the best incursion and now all want to join the police when we grow up.

Pre-Primary

October has been a month of celebrations for Pre-Primary. We have had five class birthdays, and we will help the Year Twelve students celebrate their graduation at the Valedictory Assembly tomorrow. This week, we discussed how our families celebrate birthdays. We discovered that many of us have cake with candles, presents and special meals. We have also been sharing other family celebrations including Christmas, Easter and New Year.

Year One

The Year One students started their inquiry by opening a special celebration box, which contained lots of items that might be used for a celebration – the children were particularly thrilled to activate their own glow stick bracelets. Then they completed a ‘see, think, wonder’ exercise, by looking at different photos of multicultural celebrations. The class explored the question ‘what is a celebration?’ and then refined their ideas with the question ‘what is a tradition?’. The focus book has been The Jolly Postman, a wonderful book full of secret letters from nursery rhyme characters and fairy tales. Nursery rhymes have been read each day by the children, and the Post Office was officially opened in the classroom! What a wonderful start to the term!

Year Two

We have begun our inquiry by looking into the life-cycle of a bean plant. We have made our own mini-greenhouses and are eagerly awaiting the seeds to sprout and develop into seedlings. We have enjoyed planning and writing our narratives this week, and it has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm, creativity and great use of adjectives and adverbs in our sentences. In Health we have been looking at how to live a healthy lifestyle. So far, we have discussed getting enough sleep, being active and having time for rest and relaxation. Next week we will move on to looking at the foods that fuel our bodies.

Year Three

Week Two was not paying attention, until he realised that Week One had finished his part, and everyone was watching him to see what he would do. Thankfully, he was well prepared, and the ‘grouping’ from the previous week split into division, fractions and angles. The business planning from the previous week helped to guide this week’s research into Australia’s neighbouring countries and the delicious things they can teach us about dessert. The knowledge of physics from previous terms informed our research into changing states of matter (although, we are yet to discover which state is the most delicious). Week Three is sure to arrive faster than we expected, but our inquiry is running on schedule, and we will eventually uncover why we eat what we eat.

Year Four

Year Four has spent the week at Camp Quaranup having a fabulous time making memories. We look forward to a recount of this as next week’s feature article.

Year Five

We welcome student teacher Miss Dallimore into Mr Osborne’s class. She has been doing some fun Mathematics activities with small groups. In Science we have been exploring the properties of light: what causes shadows and how white light is made up of a spectrum of colours. Students explored ways to make Newtons colour wheel in a STEM challenge with some creative working models to help demonstrate this concept. In HASS we have started to learn about the colonisation of Australia, Aboriginal perspectives and who by and when it was mapped by Europeans. Students have started looking at poetic techniques in English to help them create some creative pros.

Year Six

The Year Six students are busy in preparation for their final Primary School camp and cannot wait to tackle Rottnest Island! They are putting the finishing touches towards their service learning programme and are looking forward to receiving their Anchor badge in recognition of their hard work. Also, a reminder for Year Six students who were fitted for a blazer, please can the blazers be collected from and paid for at the Uniform Shop by Friday 31 October.

Languages

Bonjour tout le monde! This week in French, all classes jumped right back into our pâtisserie theme as if the holidays had never happened. I was so impressed that everyone remembered their delicious vocabulary and grammar from Term Three! Our ECC students had a blast creating mini clay pâtisseries complete with written tags; Middle Primary made their own sets of French memory cards (which double perfectly for a game of snap!); and Upper Primary whipped up some very creative comic strips showing what might happen inside a bustling French bakery. It has been a sweet start to the term − pun absolutely intended!
