As our Year 12 students enter their final weeks of preparation, this period can bring a mix of determination, pressure, and anticipation. Families play an important role in helping students navigate this time with balance and perspective.
Here are four strategies that you can use to support your child during their Year 12 exam revision journey:
Encouraging your child to create a study plan for each day or week. Having structure helps them prioritise tasks, manage their time effectively, and approach revision with intention. I would suggest they complete this on a Sunday night, for the following week, or the night before for the following day.
Within this plan, it’s just as important to schedule regular breaks — whether that’s time to socialise, exercise, or simply rest. These breaks help maintain motivation and wellbeing. One strategy that we have used throughout this year with our cohort is the Pomodoro Timer method, a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo (see image below).
When students complete practice exams or tasks, they may not get the results they hope for (particularly in the beginning) — and that’s okay. This is where a growth mindset becomes invaluable. Encourage them to reflect on what they can learn from each experience and focus on strategies to refine and improve. Progress often happens gradually, and persistence will pay off in the long term.
It can also be motivating for students to track their progress over time on a spreadsheet or exam revision planner that has been created by their subject teacher. Seeing improvement across practice exams helps build confidence and reinforces their hard work.
Above all, your calm reassurance and encouragement can provide the stability students need as they approach their final exams with confidence and resilience.
