Stories of Migration – Suitcase Stories Exhibition

Article by Antonella Di Stefano, Year 6 Leader

This term, our Year 6 students explored the theme of migration through the Stories of Migration unit, connecting history with lived experience by crafting personal biographies. Since migration is a part of most Australian families’ stories, this unit encouraged students to uncover and reflect on the journeys that have shaped our nation’s identity.

Over the holiday break, students conducted interviews with a family member, friend, or community member who had migrated to Australia. These conversations gave insight into the challenges and motivations behind migration - the reasons people leave their homeland and the opportunities that attract them to a new country. By combining these real-life accounts with their learning in English and Humanities, students developed biographies that were both meaningful and historically rich.

The project culminated in Suitcase Stories, a creative showcase where students designed a symbolic suitcase representing their subject’s migration journey. These suitcases, paired with the written biographies, were proudly presented at the Parents and Friends Expo on Thursday, 17th September.

We extend our thanks to the many parents, grandparents and friends who attended and supported the exhibition. Your involvement gave students a true sense of purpose for their work. It was inspiring to see how confidently they shared their knowledge and experiences, and how proudly they celebrated the stories that connect us all.
