Wellbeing

At Balambalam Primary School, we are committed to supporting the wellbeing of every student. Starting school is a big step for children and families. We know that a smooth transition helps children feel safe, confident and ready to learn.
It is normal for children (and parents) to feel a mix of emotions such as excitement, nervousness or even worry about starting at a brand-new school. By acknowledging these feelings and talking openly together, children learn that it’s okay to feel two emotions at once. Reassure your child that these feelings are normal and temporary. Let them know that our school is a caring community where they will make friends, feel supported and grow as learners. These feelings usually settle as children become familiar with their new environment, new routines, and build connections with their peers and teachers.
Here are some simple ways to support your child:
- Acknowledge their feelings – Let your child know it’s normal to feel worried or nervous about something new. Listen calmly and reassure them that their feelings are valid.
- Talk positively about school – Share what they can look forward to, such as making new friends, fun activities, or learning new things. Your attitude can shape your child’s.
- Build familiarity – Read our school social story that you will receive later in the year and talk about what a typical day might look like to help reduce uncertainty.
Establish predictable routines at home – Consistent sleep, meals and after-school rituals can help children feel secure and settled.
We are looking forward to working together to help our students begin their school journey at Balambalam Primary School with confidence, curiosity and a strong sense of belonging.
