Y6: Canberra Camp

Our Year 6 cohort's Canberra Camp took place last week and was an unforgettable experience that brought Australia’s capital to life for our students.
Throughout the week-long camp, students explored the heart of our nation’s democracy and connected their recent classroom learnings to real-world experiences.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
They visited Parliament House, the Museum of Australian Democracy, and the National Electoral Education Centre, where they gained firsthand insight into how government works and the importance of civic participation. Students also toured the Australian War Memorial, reflecting on Australia’s military history and its significance.
Beyond politics and history, students experienced the fun side of Canberra through interactive visits to Questacon and the Australian Institute of Sport, where hands-on exhibits and sports challenges inspired curiosity and teamwork. The camp also included visits to the National Capital Exhibition Centre, the Film and Sound Archive, and beautiful outdoor locations such as Commonwealth Park and Anzac Parade.
With a focus on education and personal development, this camp was not only an opportunity for students to learn about Australia’s history and civic life but also about themselves. They returned with a deeper understanding of Australia’s democracy, governance, and national identity, along with a strengthened sense of independence and confidence gained from navigating new experiences together.
