Year 3 Community News
Hi everyone,
It has been a wonderful start to the year across Year 3, and we have been delighted with how smoothly the students have settled into their new classrooms. From the very beginning, students have shown enthusiasm for learning and a growing sense of independence, while demonstrating our school values of Respect, Kindness, Care, and Personal Best. It has been lovely to see students forming new friendships, learning classroom routines, and supporting one another as they adjust to a new year level.
We have been especially impressed by how confidently students have embraced new expectations and learning opportunities. Working across the year level and spending time with both teachers has helped students develop flexibility, collaboration skills, and confidence as learners. Their positive attitude and willingness to have a go has created a calm and supportive learning environment for everyone.
We believe that strong communication between home and school is key to supporting student growth, and we value working closely with families throughout the year. Please feel free to contact either of us, have a quick chat at school, or send an email if you have any questions or would like to discuss your child’s learning or wellbeing. We look forward to partnering with you to ensure every student has a happy, successful, and rewarding year in Year 3.
Term 1 Overview
English
This term in Mathematics, Year 3 students will be developing their understanding of numbers to 10,000 and beyond. Students will learn to read, write, order, and represent numbers using place value, helping them to see how numbers are built and how they relate to one another.
Students will also focus on addition and subtraction within 1,000, using a range of mental and written strategies. There will be an emphasis on selecting efficient strategies, explaining mathematical thinking, and checking answers for accuracy. These skills will support students in solving real-world problems and building confidence with number operations.
Mathematics
In Literacy, students will engage in a shared novel study of Charlotte’s Web as part of their English CORE program. Through this much-loved text, students will develop comprehension skills by exploring characters, settings, and themes, as well as responding to the text through discussion and writing.
Students will continue their explicit phonics learning through Sounds-Write, strengthening their understanding of sound-to-letter patterns to support reading, spelling, and writing. Alongside this, students will build fluency and control in their writing through ongoing handwriting and touch-typing practice, supporting both accuracy and efficiency when communicating their ideas.
Wellbeing
Turrun Values and Learning Dispositions
We have 4 strong values (Respect, Kindness, Care and Personal Best) and 4 fantastic learning dispositions (Commitment, Curiosity, Courage, Collaboration). This term we are focusing on Respect. When you are out and about it would be excellent if you could point people in the community showing these values.
Reminders
- Please ensure your child brings an art smock to school, as it will be required for art activities throughout the term.
- Our library session takes place every Thursday. On this day, students should bring their reading satchels so they can borrow and take home new reading materials. Opportunities to borrow additional library books will also be provided later in the term.
- If your child has a birthday coming up and you are considering a small celebration at school, we kindly ask that no food items are sent in. With a growing number of food allergies across the year level, this helps us maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
