Year 1 Community News
Dear Families,
Welcome to Term 1! We are so proud of how well our Grade 1 students have already settled into school life. They have been enthusiastically participating in the exciting 3, 2, 1... Turrun! activities and practising their school routines with Care and their Personal Best.
It has been wonderful to see students building friendships, showing our school values, and developing positive learning habits so early in the year. We are very much looking forward to a fantastic term filled with learning, growth, and fun.
Curriculum News
English
This term, students will build strong foundations in reading, writing, and speaking and listening. Learning will focus on:
- Developing phonics knowledge through the Sounds-Write program to support decoding and spelling.
- Recognising and using high-frequency words in reading and writing.
- Exploring engaging texts through the English Core units My Relationships & Belongings and Our Families, Our Stories, focusing on friendships, family, and belonging.
- Writing simple and expanded sentences to share ideas clearly.
- Beginning to identify key story elements, including characters, settings, and events.
Mathematics
This term, students will explore number, measurement, and patterns through hands-on and activities. Learning will focus on:
- Adding and subtracting numbers within 20 using materials, part-part-whole knowledge to 10, and a variety of calculation strategies.
- Making, comparing, and classifying familiar 2D and 3D shapes, and recognising shapes in the environment.
- Recognising, continuing, and creating repeating patterns with numbers, symbols, shapes, and objects, and identifying the repeating unit.
Wellbeing
We will support students in developing their social and emotional skills through our school values of Kindness, Care, Respect, and Personal Best.
This term, we will focus on:
- Building friendships and playing cooperatively.
- Identifying and expressing emotions in appropriate ways.
- Developing independence in daily routines.
- Practicing mindfulness and self-regulation strategies.
Reminders
📌 Morning Routine: Please ensure your child is at school on time. Students should line up in roll order when the music plays, ready to enter the classroom when the bell rings. If you arrive after the bell, you will need a late pass from the office.
📌 Art Smocks: Please ensure your child brings an art smock to school, as it will be required for art activities throughout the term.
📌 Lunchboxes & Water Bottles: Please provide healthy snacks (fruit or vegetable sticks), lunches each day, and a drink bottle filled with water.
📌 Upcoming Events: Keep an eye on Xuno for important dates and special events this term!
