Year 6 Community News
Hello everyone, and Welcome to Term 1!
We’re excited to begin 2026 with our fantastic Grade 6 students.
Term 1 is a special time for our senior students as we prepare our students for their final year of primary school and support them in their transition to secondary school.
For many of our Grade 6 students, this term also marks the beginning of their official student leadership roles for 2026. We’ll be encouraging them to reflect on their strengths, build their confidence, and explore the many ways they can contribute to our school community as leaders.
Term 1 Overview
English
In English, Year 6 students will explore the concept of peer influence during the first half of the term, examining how friendships, social pressures, and relationships can shape attitudes, choices, and behaviour. Students will engage with a range of short texts and learning activities, responding through discussion and writing to build understanding and make personal and real-world connections.
In the second half of the term, students will take part in a novel study of Onceby Morris Gleitzman. Through this text, students will deepen their comprehension skills by analysing the characters, settings, and key themes, while responding through thoughtful discussion and written tasks. The novel will provide rich opportunities to make meaningful connections, improve their vocabulary, and develop a deeper understanding of a quality narrative text and the impact of peer influence.
Mathematics
In Mathematics this term, Year 6 students will explore a range of number and measurement concepts through hands on learning and problem-solving tasks. These concepts include:
Numbers and Number Patterns
Students will develop their understanding of whole numbers by identifying, creating, and analysing number patterns. They will explore how patterns increase or decrease and use these patterns to predict and justify mathematical thinking.
Mixed Operations
Students will apply addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division strategies to solve problems involving larger numbers. A focus will be placed on choosing efficient strategies, checking solutions, and explaining reasoning when working with real world mathematical situations.
Angles
Students will investigate angles by identifying, measuring, and comparing them in shapes and everyday contexts. They will learn to recognise different types of angles and understand how angles are used in design, construction, and the environment around them.
Across all topics, students will be encouraged to explain their thinking, justify their strategies, and make connections between different areas of mathematics to deepen their understanding.
Wellbeing
Wellbeing: Our school values remain at the heart of everything we do: RESPECT, KINDNESS, CARE, and PERSONAL BEST. Alongside these, we foster our four learning dispositions: COMMITMENT, CURIOSITY, COURAGE, and COLLABORATION.
This term, we are highlighting Turrun’s value of Respect and how it can be practised beyond the classroom. At home, families can support this by encouraging polite communication, taking turns when speaking, and acknowledging each other’s efforts. Parents and carers can model respectful behaviour by showing empathy, setting fair boundaries, and working through challenges in a calm and positive way. These everyday moments help children understand that respect is shown through actions, choices, and the way we treat others.
Reminders
- Please ensure your child brings an art smock to school, as it will be required for art activities throughout the term.
- PE sessions take place on a Tuesday while year level sport takes place on a Friday, students should be in full sports uniform on these days to ensure they are ready to participate.
Our library sessions take place every Monday mornings. On this day, students should bring their reading satchels so they can borrow and take home new reading materials. At home reading is encouraged and we ask students to log this in their diaries. We will endeavour to check diaries every Friday
