Year 5 Community News
Hello everyone, and welcome to Grade 5 for 2026!
It has been wonderful reconnecting with familiar faces and getting to know the new students who have joined our classes. The children have made a fantastic start to the year, settling back into routines smoothly and showing a positive attitude toward their learning.
We’ve already seen so many examples of our school values - Respect, Care, Kindness, Personal Best - shining through in their actions, and it’s been great to see how welcoming and supportive the class has been, particularly toward our new classmates.
If you haven’t yet had the chance to visit our classroom, please feel free to pop in.
We are really looking forward to a positive and successful year ahead with this great group of students.

Term 1 Overview
English
In English, Year 5 students will explore the concept of identity during the first half of the term, examining how experiences, culture, and relationships shape who we are. Students will respond to a range of short texts and activities through discussion and writing to build understanding and personal connections. In the second half of the term, students will engage in a shared novel study of The Black Cockatoo. Through this text, students will strengthen their comprehension skills by analysing characters, settings, and key themes, while responding through thoughtful discussion and written tasks. The novel will provide rich opportunities to expand vocabulary, make inferences, and deepen students’ understanding of a narrative text.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, Year 5 students will develop their understanding of whole numbers through a range of problem solving and hands on learning experiences. Students will focus on addition and subtraction strategies with numbers up to 100,000, building accuracy and confidence when working with larger numbers. They will also explore multiplication and division of whole numbers, applying efficient strategies to solve real world problems and explain their mathematical thinking. Throughout the unit, students will be encouraged to justify their reasoning and make connections between different number concepts.
Wellbeing
Wellbeing: Our school values remain at the heart of everything we do: RESPECT, KINDNESS, CARE, and PERSONAL BEST. Alongside these, we foster our four learning dispositions: COMMITMENT, CURIOSITY, COURAGE, and COLLABORATION.
This term, our focus is on Turrun’s value of Respect. Families can show respect at home by listening to one another, using kind words, and valuing different opinions and feelings. Parents and carers might model respect by staying calm during challenging moments, such as solving a problem together or talking through disagreements thoughtfully. When family members show care, patience, and understanding, children learn what respect looks like in everyday actions and interactions.
Reminders
- Please ensure your child brings an art smock to school, as it will be required for art activities throughout the term.
- PE sessions take place on a Thursday while year level sport takes place on a Friday, students should be in full sports uniform on these days to ensure they are ready to participate.
Our library sessions take place every Monday mornings. On this day, students should bring their reading satchels so they can borrow and take home new reading materials. At home reading is encouraged and we ask students to log this in their diaries.
