Year 4 Community News

Hi Everyone,

It has been a fantastic start to the year across Year 4, and we are both extremely pleased with how the students have settled into their classrooms. From the very first days, students have approached learning with enthusiasm and confidence, consistently demonstrating our school values of Respect, Kindness, Care, and Personal Best. It has been wonderful to see students establish routines, build positive relationships, and show genuine care for one another as they begin the year together.

We have been particularly impressed by the way students have embraced the expectations of a new year level and, for some, a new school environment. Their willingness to collaborate, support their peers, and take on new challenges has been encouraging and sets a strong foundation for the year ahead. Seeing students move between learning spaces and work with both teachers has already strengthened their independence and flexibility as learners.

We strongly believe that a close partnership between school and home is essential for student success, and we value open and ongoing communication throughout the year. Please feel free to speak with either of us, pop by the classrooms, or make contact via email if you have any questions, concerns, or would like to discuss your child’s learning and wellbeing. We look forward to working together to ensure every student has a positive, engaging, and rewarding year in Year 4.

Term 1 Overview

Literacy

In Literacy, students will engage in a shared novel study of The Wild Robot. Through this text, students will build comprehension skills by exploring characters, settings, and key themes, while responding to the text through discussion and writing. The novel will provide rich opportunities to develop vocabulary, infer meaning, and deepen students’ understanding of narrative texts.

Students will also focus on morphology, learning how words are constructed using prefixes, suffixes, and base words. This understanding will support both spelling and vocabulary development, helping students to spell unfamiliar words more confidently and understand their meanings.

In addition, students will continue to develop their handwriting and touch-typing skills to improve fluency, legibility, and efficiency when writing. Spelling Mastery will be used to explicitly teach spelling patterns, rules, and strategies, supporting students to apply their learning across all areas of the curriculum.

Mathematics

This term in Mathematics, Year 4 students will focus on strengthening their understanding of whole numbers and building efficient calculation strategies. Students will work with numbers up to 100,000, developing skills in reading, writing, ordering, and representing large numbers using place value. This foundation will support all future learning in number and operations.

Students will also be consolidating and extending their skills in addition and subtraction within 100,000, with an emphasis on mental strategies, written methods, and problem-solving. They will learn to choose appropriate strategies, check the reasonableness of their answers, and explain their mathematical thinking using correct mathematical language.

A key focus this term will be developing automatic recall of multiplication tables. Students will practise their times tables regularly and learn strategies to support accuracy and fluency, which are essential for success in multiplication, division, and later mathematical concepts.

Wellbeing

Turrun Values and Learning Dispositions

We have 4 strong values (Respect, Kindness, Care and Personal Best) and 4 fantastic learning dispositions (Commitment, Curiosity, Courage, Collaboration). This term we are focusing on Respect. When you are out and about it would be excellent if you could point people in the community showing these values.

Reminders

Please ensure your child brings an art smock to school, as it will be required for art activities throughout the term.
Our library session takes place every Thursday. On this day, students should bring their reading satchels so they can borrow and take home new reading materials. Opportunities to borrow additional library books will also be provided later in the term.
If your child has a birthday coming up and you are considering a small celebration at school, we kindly ask that no food items are sent in. With a growing number of food allergies across the year level, this helps us maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
