Writer’s Workshop with Mrs Tasevski

Show, don’t tell is a writing strategy that the Year 6s have been working on that helps make stories more vivid and engaging.

  • Telling means the writer directly tells the reader what is happening or how a character feels. For example: Liam was scared.

  • Showing means the writer shows this through actions, thoughts, dialogue, or description so the reader can infer the emotion or situation. For Example: Liam’s hands trembled as he peeked around the dark corner.

In a nutshell - ‘Show, don’t tell’ helps the reader experience the story, not just read about it.

Here are a few examples of what our Year 6 authors came up with… can you guess what they are not telling you?

The boy on a 39 degree day was dripping with sweat as he was eating his ice cream.  His ice cream was melting so fast  that he couldn’t even eat it.  Since his ice cream melted so rapidly, he decided to jump into the pool to cool down. He screamed a sigh of relief as he cooled down.  By the time he jumped in the pool, his body was already burnt.

AIDEN VICECONTE- Year 6B

Max’s face turned red, his body was sweating from head to toe. He was breathing heavily like he had just run a marathon.

LUCA ASVESTAS -YEAR 6B

Her face was slowly pigmenting into a red tinge as sweat crept down her face.  She fainted.

ESTELLE RICHARDS- YEAR 6A

Max's eyes were blood shot red, his body started shivering, he felt like an iceberg was lying on top of him. His voice was croaky after the long party.

SPENCER SHAW- YEAR 6A

Falling into bed, aching in excruciating pain- his face was wrinkled as he screamed, “GOOD NIGHT!”

We later incorporated the writing strategy, ‘Show don’t Tell’ to our writing using this prompt.  The year 6s did an outstanding job! Please note their effort and use of new vocabulary; resplendent and captivating.

I was as proud as punch!

The astronaut was shocked by the amazing path he had been led on, his face was slumped- his body and legs were in agony, his voice silent as he hadn't spoken to anyone because it was so lonely where he was. He continued his journey on this unknown planet, he kept walking and quickly thought to himself …this place is resplendent.

RYLAN INGRAM-YEAR 6A

As he sat on the soft, green grass, his thoughts raced like F1 cars.  Tears ran down his face like rivers, his body felt weak and soft- his chest started to ache. His fingers went numb.  With every breath he took he could feel the pain as he sat there in complete silence, full of grief and disbelief.  His voice trembled when he shouted, “WHY? WHY?” His eyes were burning like flames.

WILLIAM ELLUL- YEAR 6A

She lay on the field of grass, taking in all that was on this unknown planet that was full of life.  Sitting up straight, she took off her helmet and let the air that she could somehow breathe hit her face and her hair.  She was captivated by the scenery that was around her.  Flowers danced  lively and the sky turned orange and pink. As the run rose, a smile spread across her face.

NIAMH CARMODY- YEAR 6A

As soon as the astronaut landed, he bolted through the spaceship trying to find the exit.  When he got out, he stood as still as a soldier, admiring the exotic planet he just stepped foot on.  He thought to himself, ‘Look how resplendent these plants look.’ His body started to fill with joy, he expressed his actions by jumping around like a boy on Christmas Day.

THOMAS BUSER - YEAR 6A

Our Eco Warriors are looking forward to introducing our school community to Nude Food November. During this month we will be trying to lower our school’s rubbish levels. So many people in our school are already doing a great job in looking after the environment, this initiative is about reminding us to each do our part and a small change can make a big difference. Please note, this is not compulsory, we are not looking for perfection this is about being more aware and making small changes where we can.

Year 3/4 Incursion: Birds of Hume

Last week our year three and four students had a wonderful incursion presented by Melissa from the Hume City Council called ‘Birds of Hume.’ They learnt all about different species of birds in our community, habitats, diet, different bird calls,  and using binoculars to find birds. They spent time outside looking for and learning about the birds that visit our school grounds.
