Nurse's Notes

Did you know there's a link between low Vitamin D and sunscreen use?

Darker skin

  • Sun exposure: Requires more exposure than lighter skin types, potentially 3 to 6 times longer.
  • When to protect: Sun protection is not generally needed unless spending extended time outdoors, in which case sunscreen is recommended to prevent sunburn and photoaging.
  • Risk factors: People with very dark skin are at a lower risk of skin cancer and can spend more time outdoors to get enough vitamin D.

Lighter skin

  • Sun exposure: A few minutes of mid-morning or mid-afternoon sun on exposed arms can be enough to produce vitamin D.
  • When to protect: Use sun protection (sunscreen, hats, clothing) when the UV index is 3 or higher, especially during peak hours.
  • Additional risks: Individuals with pale skin are at higher risk for sunburn and skin cancer.

To improve your Vitamin D level be aware of when to use sun screen in the day and how much sun exposure your skin type needs.

Have a great school break and see you in 2026 for term 1, Insha’Allah.
