Year 1/2
Year 1/2 Cluster News
Thank you to all the wonderful parent volunteers who helped on Sports Day and Harmony Day! We greatly appreciate your time and support.
Good Friday and Easter Monday
Good Friday 29th March and Easter Monday 1st April are Public Holidays.
Take Home Books
A separate note will be put into clear folders in Take Home Folders, along with your child’s first Take Home Books.
Students are able to borrow from the school library on any day of the week, if they return their books. The community library in the courtyard provides another source of books to take home. We also welcome donations of suitable books into the community library.
Cardboard
In the next few weeks, we will be using our ideas to create things and so we are in need of cardboard and other interesting materials that could spark our creativity. If you are able to help, please send items in when you can.
Home Inquiry
What is a problem you or your family has around your home? e.g. no one wants to unload the dishwasher. Can you design a creation to solve the problem? What materials and tools will you need? This thinking might help you when you consider your creation to make in class next week.
Mental Computation ideas
Near doubles e.g. 4+4 = 8 so 4+5 = 8+1 = 9
https://www.abcya.com/games/interactive_100_number_chart
Change to setting to the 120 chart then use this number chart to colour the 2s, then the 5s, then the 10s. Please note, this can only be used on a desktop computer.
Reading library books or home books – We encourage approximately 10-15 minutes each night.
Learning for Week 10:
Literacy:
Reader’s Workshop mini lessons: build on reading strategies taught in Foundation e.g. stretchy snake. A sheet with these strategies will be placed in Take Home Folders so they can also be referred to at home.
Writer’s Workshop mini lessons: students continue to record ideas which can be used when considering what to write about in their bookmaking e.g. a question page, an ‘I’ page about me, heroes and models page.
Spelling
Each week there is a focus ‘sound of the week’. Students are introduced to groups of words which use the spelling patterns and revise the alternative spellings of vowel sounds.
The sound of the week is not intended to be a spelling list for you to teach your child at home. It is for you to be aware of what we are teaching at school and you are welcome to use the sound as a starting point for your child to share what they are learning.

Mathematics:

Unit of Inquiry:
Central Idea: Ideas allow us to think, create and express ourselves
Line of Inquiry 1: ideas as a tool for learning
Line of Inquiry 2: ways in which we discover and communicate ideas
Line of Inquiry 3: inspiration leads to creativity
Students choose a ‘problem’ and consider design a solution. They record their ideas, seek feedback from others, record how their ideas change and present their final creation in Week 11.
Christian Studies: Christian Beliefs
Key Idea: We explore and outline ways Christians make decisions about how to live.
Students interview Christians in the school and/or at home/church if they would like to, about how they make decisions. Finally, students will reflect on how this new information may influence their decision making.
