Demystifying VET Terminology

(this is an important read for parents and students in Years 9, 10,11,12)

In Vocational Education and Training (VET) there are many Acronyms for people to understand and the implication of these when looking at VET courses and understanding the payment of various courses or wanting to attend Trade Skills days and how this will impact further decisions they make in their future subject selection. This article is set up to answer many questions and give links to advance your understanding of the systems put in place Government around funding availability.

Questions often askedResponse Impact on students and what they do.Link for more information
What is VET?
  • VET is Vocational Education and Training.
  • It is a form of education that allows a practical understanding and development of skills to industry standard.
  • Students enrol in a Qualification that is recognised in Australia at an AQF level
  • Students must meet the requirements of the VET course to industry standard with clear evidence of this before they can be awarded a Qualification.
  • VET subjects are competency-based with students receiving competent or not competent or working towards (where more evidence is required.
The Subject selection handbook and the information evenings clearly outline that there are various pathways for students to take whilst at College. Conversations and clarification on these pathways is important for students to have during conversations at interviews with staff. Make an appointment with the Program Leader - VET if you are still unsure. AQF level
What is the difference between Qualifications delivered by our RTO and an External RTO?
  • All qualifications meet the same requirements for AQF levels.
  • Qualifications delivered at the College as the RTO may have fees for consumables (Approx $150-200). There is no extra cost for the subject delivery as this is in the College fees.
  • External Providers delivering in the College by enrolling in a qualification with an external RTO - funded either by the department's VET investment budget or through fee-for-service arrangements i.e. where the student or parent pays for the qualification.
  • as a school-based apprentice or trainee.
  • Students will be supported and given opportunities to meet the requirement of the courses delivered.
  • Students must complete all evidence requirements before they will be deemed competent in any part of the course.
  • Students who fail to complete the course requirements will only receive a statement of attainment for what they have given evidence for.
  • Students will be given extra support during exam blocks and external courses also offer holiday catch-up for those who require it which they are responsible to attend.

VETiS Funding
  • VETiS qualifications funded by the VET investment budget are listed on the Priority Skills List. Training (VET investment budget)—provides funding to any RTO that is approved by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training as a Skills Assure Supplier (SAS).
  • The cost of VETiS Funded courses by the Government ranges from $1,800-$5,800
  • Students undertaking VETiS, are only funded for 1 VETiS qualification at the certificates I or II level funded under the VET investment budget.
Students and caregivers need to make informed decisions on what pathway they want to take and ensure that they meet the requirements of the course before they select the options they want.

Priority Skills List

Facts Sheet

Facts Sheet 2

How do I know how much my course will cost?
  • Each year students and parents will have a link to the Subject Selection Handbook Which is published each year.
  • It will clearly identify the process of payment:
  • VETiS funded.
  • Payment directly to the External RTO.
  • Payment via the Parent Portal (the college then pays in bulk to the provider- at their request)

Review and ask questions about the funding if you are unclear. It is not an option to opt out of any course due to not knowing the cost prior to the course. The implications may mean losing VETiS funding or having to pay part costs of the course you have completed thus far.
What if I want to do two or three VETiS-funded courses?
  • Please organise a meeting with the PLVET to discuss the options of payment. We have special arrangements with some External RTOs that will support your son’s choices.
  • Discussion will assist in identifying which is the most cost-effective way to address the situation.
  • The Subject Selection Handbook also gives both options so that you can have a clear understanding of costs.
  • Once VETiS funding is used full payment will be the only option moving forward. Careful selection is the key.

Students and caregivers need to be very sure about the courses they have selected. A lot of time is spent analysing and sending out information about the best method of multiple costs when several VETiS funded course are selected by students.

This would be better completed in an interview with the Program Leader- VET at your earliest convenience after subject selection.
