Boarding News

Mr Jim Noble, Assistant Head of College - Boarding

Dear Boarding Parents and Guardians,

This Friday key staff members from Marist College Ashgrove will be in Goondiwindi to support the Goondiwindi Emus Charity Golf Day. Funds raised this year will be donated to Ronald McDonald House and Angel Flight. Many current and past boarders from Marist enjoyed their early years of playing rugby for the Emus and the school always tries to support this community event. We will also be catching up with current and future boarding families that night for dinner at the Queensland Hotel.

Our end of term bus service is operating again for our boarders on Wednesday 27 March. There will be two services running. One is going to Moree and the other to Roma, as well as stopping at a number of centres along the way. Parents can make a booking for $40.00 and bookings need to be made by the end of next week. We are also able to assist boarders to get to the airport or the Roma Street Transit Centre, so please contact Boarding Reception early to ensure we have staff available to help with this.

A reminder that the third annual Marist College Ashgrove Boarders’ Touch Football Tournament is getting closer and will be held on our ovals on Sunday 24 March. This event continues to grow and we’ve have received tremendous interest from schools keen to get involved. We are expecting 20 boarding schools to participate and around 70 teams from as far afield as Rockhampton and Armidale. It’s looking like there will be well over 1,000 boarding school students here on the day and it should be a great celebration of boarding for all involved. We look forward to hosting this event and making it a great experience for all the students.

Finally, please remember that winter uniform is to be worn by the boys in Terms 2 and 3. Years 5 – 10 wear a long sleeve grey shirt and Years 11 – 12 wear a long sleeve blue shirt. Blazers will be part of the winter uniform for Years 5, 6, 7, 10, 11 and 12 and are required to be worn from the first day of next term. Years 8 and 9 students will require blazers from next year. The yellow trim is required on blazers for Years11 and 12 students. The yellow trim distinguishes the seniors from the junior and middle year levels, now that they are also wearing blazers. You can order blazers online at https://www.noone.com.au/school/marist-college-ashgrove/. For fittings, the opening times of the Uniform Shop are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:30am to 4:00pm.

Boarding Recreation

Mr Blair Whitlock - Boarding Recreation Officer

Week 7 was a busy one of the rec front with live sport matches taking center stage. On Friday afternoon we headed south of the river to support the AFL 1st’s in their big game against Lauries. The team put on a clinic with boarders Troydan Ross, Isaac Roach, Jack Watson, Liam Rice, Sean Green and Ewan Wood leading the charge! Well done boys.

On Saturday afternoon we headed over to Stuartholme for a couple of hours of fun with a Colour War & Slip n Slide. The boys love heading up the hill to Stuartholme and are building some great friendships with their boarders which is great to see. We had a quick turnaround at Marist before heading down to Suncorp for the QLD Reds match against the Waikato Chiefs. It was a tight match with the Reds managing to hold on for a narrow 25-19 victory. Our seats were right behind the Reds defensive line as they defended 20+ phases to secure the win. It was nice to see the junior teams from the Goondiwindi Emus and Dalby Wheatmen have a run around on the pitch at half time too!

The La Valla and Montagne boys loaded the bus on Sunday morning and headed out for a Mystery Activity. Despite dozens of guesses they were none the wiser as we drove out the back of Samford to the Cedar Creek area. It’s a cracking spot to swim and the boys had heaps of fun out in the bush. The final rec activity of the weekend was another trip down to Suncorp for a QLD clash as the Redcliffe Dolphins took on the NQ Cowboys. There were split allegiances in the group of 35 boys that came along to the game. The Cowboys attack proved too strong in the end as they steamrolled the Phins to take a 43-18 victory.
