Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

It was another huge week in sport last week. It started on Tuesday with our swimming team doing a wonderful job at the AIC Swimming Championships, finishing second overall and winning the Year 5, 14 years and 16 years. It was pleasing to see such a high-quality performance from our team and a strong indicator of the community spirit and sense of team that our swimming community has. Congratulations to all swimmers who did a PB, won a race or broke a school or AIC record. It is worth noting that 82.9% of our team set personal bests at this meet which is an extraordinary result. Well done to St Peters for taking out the AIC title, the program there is one of the benchmarks in Australia. We dust ourselves off, we get in the pool again, and we go again.

I thank our Head Coach, Mr James Boyce, who is clearly one of the very best young coaches in Queensland, if not Australia. James works tirelessly for Marist, both AIC team and the swim club, and the results that his swimmers continue to produce is a credit to him and the program. Thank you also to Assistant Head Coach Damien Bromley and all the coaches involved in the program including Ziggi Jacks and Lachie Gough. Thank you also to the staff who have contributed to helping the boys develop as swimmers and as young men- Roxanne Rosenberg, David Meehan, John Lambourne, Anntoinette Restell and Cath Geraghty. A huge thank you also to Jade Ritchie, who as our Swimming Coordinator went over and above in preparing all the details, organised the staff, coordinated all the events and logistics and did a terrific job hosting the awards function.

Last Saturday we went head-to-head with St Laurence’s College across the three summer sports. All three first team matches were classics and in all three both schools could quite easily have come out in front. On Friday night, after a slow start where we were two goals down inside the first five minutes the team played with a maturity and commitment beyond anything we have seen this season to outperform their more fancied opponents in what was a really good win. On Saturday the 1st VI went down again in an epic five setter 19-17 in the fifth, in a match that really could have gone either way. That is three tough five-set losses now that could have easily been wins and changes the context if their whole season. The 1st XI cricket let SLC get off to a good start with the bat, and while we bowled better in the second half of their innings, they made a challenging total of 209. We made good work of the chase early and right up to the last overs looked like we would get the runs only to fall three agonizing runs short in as tense a finish as you could get.

Overall, in cricket we won 16 matches to 8 losses, in AFL we won 5 matches and lost 10, and in volleyball SLC won 17 matches to our 7. The weekend was highly competitive across all sports with lots of close matches that went either way. It was great to see sport played in the right spirit across the various venues, competitive but respectful and safe for all.

Swimming

Mr James Boyce - Director of Swimming

Last Tuesday, our talented Marist College Ashgrove Swimming Team participated in the AIC Swimming Championships at the Sleemans Sports Centre.

While we extend our congratulations to St Peters Lutheran College for their eighth consecutive victory, we are immensely proud of our team's achievements, securing a well-deserved second place. It's crucial to recognise this accomplishment while maintaining a commitment to continuous improvement.

During a post-event discussion with the team, the focus was on the path forward, emphasising the importance of consistency, teamwork, and individual accountability. While second place is a commendable achievement, it fuels our determination to elevate our performance and compete fiercely against St Peter’s and other AIC Schools in the future.

Let's take a moment to reflect on the remarkable achievements of our team members:

  • The Under 14 and 16 boys clinched victory in their respective aggregates.
  • The Boys 14 Years Div 1 Freestyle relay shattered an 11-year AIC and College Record.
  • Boys 16 years Div 1 Free Relay set a new AIC and College Record.
  • Boys 16 Years Medley Relay also achieved a new College record.
  • The Open Div 2 Freestyle Relay made history by breaking a College Record.

Well done, boys.

Special congratulations to Daniel Sadimenko for breaking the Year 5 AIC 50m Backstroke record. Well done, Daniel.

Thank you, must go out to our coaches, teachers, and parents for their support throughout the year. Your time and effort contribute significantly to the success and well-being of our swimmers.

To those who did not make the final swimming team, we appreciate your commitment and acknowledge your vital role in our team's competitiveness. Your dedication to training will surely bring future opportunities.

Looking ahead, we recognise the need to enhance our performance in specific areas to secure a first place finish next year. As a program, we remain committed to continuous improvement and excellence.

Swimming activities will continue for all boys, and we encourage everyone to check the app for upcoming pool events.

Once again, congratulations to our remarkable swimmers and everyone involved in making this year's AIC Swimming Championships a memorable success.

Marist Basketball Carnival 2024

James Lidstone – Marist 1st V Coach

The annual Marist Basketball Carnival is being held on 24-28 March at Beenleigh. Trials commenced in early February and a squad of 20 was selected. The boys have been training twice a week including Sundays in preparation for the tournament. The tour is a great springboard into the basketball season, the week away gives the players a chance to bond as a group and get to know each other away from the basketball court. Just as important are playing 7 games in 4 days and getting to compete against some very good Marist basketball schools. It is a privilege to wear the blue and gold at these events and we will be ensuring that we play basketball the right way. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players for trialling and preparing for this tournament. I would also like to thank John Lambourne for his behind the scenes work in organising everything from accommodation, food, uniforms and everything else in between.

Football

Mr Derek Lennon (Football Coordinator)

Next week will see the start of the 2024 AIC football season trials for our Year 7-12 teams. The trial details will be released later this week on the College app in the football section. Boys should attend as many trials as they can to be able to give the coaches as much evidence as they can to make decisions.

The selection policy is available in the football section of the College app.

All boys must be registered to play Football. You will not be able to play in the AIC season if you are not registered. The last chance for players to be added to the registration list is the internal trial day on Saturday 23rd March. If you are not registered by then you will not be eligible to play.

Year 8, 9 and 10 A teams will have provisional squads released this Friday. Those boys named in these squads are to continue training. All other boys are to attend the relevant year level trials. Year 10s who are trialling for the 1sts who miss out will be playing in year 10, not opens 2nds or 3rds. Do not assume because you attended A trials you will automatically go into the Bs, you must trial again.

The team trials for all other teams will start on Monday 18 March, the internal trial day Saturday 23rd March and continue in Week 10.

We are scheduled to play A-B and some C teams against St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace on Saturday 13th April. Players will be asked at trials if they are available for this trial. Teams for these matches will be posted on the College App on Friday of week 10. At that stage these teams are still provisional and will be subject to change over the first few weeks of Term 2.

Instructions For All Trials

Trials are in various locations and days- check the trial schedule on the College App carefully closer to the dates.

Boys will need to report in at the first trial they attend to the Year Coordinator and ensure their name is marked off for every trial they attend afterwards.

Boys should look to attend as many trials as they can for selection but need to balance with their academic workload and also honour your term 1 sport commitments. Consider your academic exam schedule and make informed decisions about whether you need to attend a trial or miss a trial to prepare for exams. Clear communication with the Year Coordinator is vital here.

If you are unable to attend the scheduled trials you need to email the Year Level Coordinator in advance of the trial to notify. Provide your name and student number and the reason you are missing the trial.

Boys are to wear Marist training shirt, Marist football shorts and socks, football boots and shin pads to trial.

Illness and injury will impact on the selection process. Trials will continue until the end of week 1, some year levels may take longer than others. This is to allow all boys to be graded fairly.

Players will need to indicate availability for trial matches on Saturday 15 April at the Saturday internal trial round (23th March).

Rugby Union

Mr Richard Graham – Director of Rugby / Track and Field

Easter Rugby Camp – Sunday 14 April

SAVE THE DATE!

Please keep an eye out for information relating to the Easter Rugby Camp. Last year we had over 300 students from Year 5-12 attend the camp which included skill development, games, fun events, the season launch, giveaways, special guests, and a number of selected matches against Nudgee College.

This year we plan to be bigger and better again!

Blue Squad – Trial Match

Thanks to the Brother’s Rugby Union Club for hosting the Blue Squad’s trial on Sunday. The College has a long history with the club and we appreciate them allowing us to use their facilities for the trial game.

Forty-five students trialled for the 1st XV and 2nd XV teams across 4 x 20-minute quarters. After a solid preseason build up, it was great to finally see the group get the opportunity to play a game.

As expected in the first competitive hit out, the game was physical and the pressure a level above the previous semi-opposed training sessions. The effort of the students and some of the interplay was outstanding. There were a number of notable performances and it was wonderful to see Joel Drew continue on from his good form in 2023.

The new tackle law challenged a number of the students tackle technique and body positioning. Rugby union has consistently positioned itself as leader in promoting the safety of all participants, and this new law will be one the coaches and players have to adapt to quickly.

Thanks to the staff who volunteered their time and supported the students during the trial day - Mr Chris Daykin, Mr Adam Earnshaw, and Mr Mitch Reid; our Year 12 students who ran touch line, Hugo Tully and Jack Shay; and our four Year 7 students who were there as ball boys – Lachlan Cobus, Daniel Dau, Hezra Rankin and Kaynen Flinders. All helped make it a great day at the Brother’s club.

Marist Rugby Union | Sign On

Thanks to the student and parents / guardians who have already completed the sign on process.

If you haven’t signed on yet, please go to the Marist app and see information regarding the sign on process. ALL students who wish to play Term 2 sports are asked to sign up via the student café. Once your son/s have signed up all parents or caregivers MUST approve the signup and edit or update any medical details.

This assists the College in organising the appropriate number of coaching staff and to deliver the necessary resources.

Rugby Ready Program | Year 5-12

This is the FINAL week of the 4-week Rugby Ready Program. Please continue to read the Marist app for all the necessary details including the program content, schedule and dress code.

Thanks to both the students for staying on the scheduled timeline and parents / guardians who have continued to read the information. This has helped us remain on schedule and should allow all students wishing to play rugby to be prepared for trials.

A reminder for those students wishing to play rugby union at the College that the Rugby Ready Program is a mandatory program. I understand some students have missed sessions due to injury or illness, however I will work with all the students to make sure you complete the program.

Please NOTE, if a student does miss a session, please attend another session that week either a year level up or down eg. Year 8 can attend Year 7 or Year 9. This ensures that a student remains on the same schedule each week as his year level and can re-join his group the following week with a full understanding of the language, techniques required, and the physical progression.

Thanks to the coaches for volunteering their time and expertise to the program. Marist is fortunate to have many staff, old boys and current students contributing to the rugby program. We appreciate all that they do in creating a safe and challenging rugby environment.

NOTE – A reminder to any student who swam at the AIC Championships, please attend two Rugby Ready sessions this week. That should put you on a total of three sessions with a fourth to be completed at the start of next week. Please follow the above guidance on attending a session +/- a year level.

Rugby Union Training and Trials

Please make sure you see the Marist app for Year level training sessions scheduled in Week 9 and 10.

If you are Year 10, please note all sessions this season will be held at Jeeps on the field closest to the College. Please move quickly and safely from the College to be ready for a 3:30pm start.

See the Rugby Union Key Dates Calendar in the Marist app for all games throughout the season, including trial games in Term 1.

Following the conclusion of the Rugby Ready Program at the end of Week 8, the boys will start to prepare in their Year levels for the full school internal trial on Saturday 23 March (end of Week 9). This day also serves as the Rosalie Tribute Round.

Marist Rugby Union – Referees

Thanks to the students and the parent who have attended the first three weeks of the Marist Rugby Referee’s course.

Following three weeks in the classroom, the group will take to the field for a practical class and learning this Friday afternoon. The key focus areas will be referee positioning, communication and signalling, and developing confidence in blowing the whistle.

Students who complete the course and become a referee are able to earn $25-$40 dollars per game. For those students who are still playing, we will look to find games where possible around your own fixtures.

Our referees are an integral part of the game and we look forward to welcoming this new crop of young referees into our Marist referee’s community.
