Walking on Country- Koonung Creek:
This term as part of our Integrated Studies unit, our students have been learning all about Australia’s First Nation People. We have been building our understanding of the perspectives and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples. As part of this learning, students have built an understanding of what it means to live and learn on Wurundjeri Country and the importance of showing respect for Country.
All this learning builds upon students’ experiences in Art where they have been learning all about Birrarung (Yarra River). Using satellite images, students followed our local Koonung creek all the way to Birrarung and then used a bird’s eye view perspective to illustrate the river. As part of our unit, more recently we have been learning about the Wurundjeri Seasons. With the month of March being Iuk (Eel season) we brought together our learning and celebrated this season with a local excursion to Koonung creek.
Students had a great time connecting with Country, collecting treasures and listening to the sounds of Country.
Thank you to our amazing parent volunteers for helping this event take place!
Lemonade (Procedural Writing):
This term a highlight for our students was learning about Procedural Writing.
A few of our Grade 1 students had an amazing idea to start a lemonade stall, which inspired our lesson!
Students enjoyed the opportunity to follow and create recipes, while learning about the important elements of a procedural text.
