Grade 4

Literacy

This week we have been reading and examining a wonderful picture called ‘ANZAC Biscuits, by Phil Cummings. It is a story of a Mother and daughter making biscuits for their father who is off in the war.  We learned a lot of new vocabulary including treacle, trudged, quaked, stoked, and grimy. We inferred and compared the feelings of the characters and how different similar events can have such a different impact on us depending on our current circumstances. We also investigated the use of colour and picture layout and how it helps our understanding of the text.

Maths

The grade 4 students have been looking deeply into subtraction. We have been investigating the relationship between subtraction and addition, as well as numerous mental strategies that can be used to make solving subtraction equations more simple. The grade 4s are now able to use strategies such as jump, partitioning, levelling and regrouping to solve questions that are 2-digits, 3-digits, 4-digits, some students even being confident enough to work with 7-digits.

Integrated

For the year 4 students this week, they have been looking at the ANZACs and how they have shaped our history. We have looked at why they were called the ANZACs, where it all took place, and when we take time to remember them.

We have been looking at Anzac biscuits, and the book, and comparing that with what happened.

Chromebooks

For Chromebooks this week, the year 4’s have been asked to research the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli. This has helped with integrated studies as well, so they can find information on the First World War and learn how to find the information using a computer.

Respectful Relationships

Respectful relationships has been looking at the differences we all face when we come together. This has worked well with harmony day, as it has shown the students, that while we are all different, we are all connected to each other through the community and school. It has shown us that we can all belong in the same space, have different ideas, but still get along with each other.

Harmony Day

We had an incredible Harmony Day celebration in Week 8! Our students radiated diversity and unity as they dressed up in vibrant cultural outfits and brought delicious traditional foods to share. Throughout the day, students engaged in various Harmony Day activities, fostering understanding, respect, and appreciation for different cultures. It was heartwarming to see our school community come together in celebration of our rich cultural tapestry, promoting harmony and acceptance among all.
