Grade 2
One more week till the end of Term 1 and the last two weeks have been jam-packed for our Grade 2’s!. Here is an update on what has been going on in our wonderful Grade 2 classes...
Initialit:
InitiaLit is continuing on its strong roll out. In the last two weeks the students have completed a comprehension assessment on a text called ‘The Bike Track’. This has also served as a Learning Task that parents will be able to view on Compass as of Monday.
Additionally, students have learned our latest ‘Tricky Words’: ‘something’, ‘ask’ & ‘What’
Our Tricky Word Trees
Maths:
Place Value continues to be the focus in the last two weeks.
This is a common approach for Term 1 across most levels as Place Value lays the foundation for all mathematical concepts and allows students to recognise the closely connected relationships across all strands of numeracy.
In week’s 6 & 7, students completed an ‘exit ticket’ on both Friday mornings. These snapshot assessments serve as a quick glimpse into how our students are tracking. These exit tickets have been based on ‘expanded-partitioning’. (i.e. 326= 300 + 20 + 6).
We have gradually scaffolded the students to do this first with two-digit numbers, to three-digit numbers and even four-digit numbers!
The results of these exit tickets have shown great growth and success for our students and the teachers couldn’t be more proud!!
Integrated:
Students have had the chance to learn about toys in the past and compare them to toys of today!
The students had great fun making ‘cup and ball toy’
This proved to be a very fun and lively lesson for the students as they tried their hardest to catch the aluminium foil ‘ball’ with the cup!
Swimming:
The Year 2 students have been busy learning some essential life-skills in our swimming program this week! They have kicked and splashed their little hearts out and as a result, they may be in need of a well-deserved rest this weekend!!
Harmony Day:
March 21st saw all students at Grayling Primary School come together to celebrate and observe ‘Harmony Day’
The day was a busy but rounding success with all students engaging in activities that focused on the understanding that all people are equals and valued, regardless of race, culture, religion, beliefs, gender or abilities.
Many students came to school in spectacular dress or wearing the color of the flag that represents their heritage. We shared delicious food from all cultures and participated in a parade to proudly show off our sensational attire. Marlo Kajer from 2D won best dressed in Grade 2 for her exquisite head piece and beautiful dress, representing her Islander heritage.
