Grade 1

Literacy

In our Literacy blocks we have been learning about some new digraphs that make the same sounds. Students have been learning when to use certain digraphs in words. For example, we use ‘ai’ for the sound ‘a’ in the middle of words and ‘ay’ at the end of words. Students have demonstrated an increasing awareness of when to use these digraphs to create words.

In Writing, we have been focusing on the mentor text ‘Edwina the Emu’, that follows the story of a emu who is trying to find a job and travels all over town trying new things before realising that being home with her family is where she needs to be. Students explored the meanings of the words: announce, require, perfect - and used this new knowledge to put them into sentences. We have also been focusing on our handwriting skills and how to write on the lines accurately using the Sky, Grass and Dirt method.

Maths

In Maths, students have further developed their knowledge of numbers 0 to 50. This has involved using a range of hands-on resources such as number lines, number charts, unifix and place value charts. Students have worked on locating numbers on number lines and charts, as well as using vocabulary such as before, after, one less or one more. They have also worked on partitioning numbers into tens and ones using a place value chart.

Integrated

In the past fortnight, the Grade 1’s have been continuing their learning about family structures. Students investigated how the roles of families have changed from the past to present. The Grade 1’s were then able to use a Venn Diagram to display their own as well as their peers’ families, their similarities and differences. Extending on this, students used their knowledge and understanding of ‘past and present’ to engage in class discussions, answering open-ended questions whilst incorporating their opinions.
