Mrs Robyn Wilson - MaST - Mathematics Specialised Teacher

Our Maths Session in Stage 1

Here at St Joseph's are very proud of our Maths lessons and all the great work that all the staff do to provide an engaging session for the students. This week I will be highlighting all the fantastic work that goes on in the Stage 1 classroom.

Mrs Crane begins each Maths lesson with talking about the learning intentions of the lesson. Below Evie is showing us where to find the learning intentions on the Maths Wall. Mrs Crane also has the learning intentions and success criteria on her learning slides.

Mrs Crane then comes down to the students level and demonstrates the concept that the children are learning about that session. In the videos below Mrs Crane is explicitly teaching the students about place value and she uses concrete materials to reinforce what she is teaching.

Then she has the students demonstrate what they have learned to check for understanding and reinforce what she has been saying. Below you can see Violet using concrete materials to help demonstrate that 45 has 4 tens and 5 ones.

Next we have Grace doing the same but using the numicons.

Then we have Jack using the connecting blocks.

The students then move onto group work. Below you can see what groups the students are in and what they will be learning. These groups are changed depending on the student's needs.

The students then go off into their groups and they do independent work while Mrs Crane works with each of the students to give guided instruction.  Mrs Gamble helps groups and independent students.

Darcie and Evie's group were putting two digit numbers in order smallest to largest.

Mrs Gamble is helping Zarabelle, Hayley and Arli with some revision of the work they did with time last week.

Luca, Jack and Grace are practising what they learned in the session led by Mrs Crane.

Mrs Crane is working with Priscilla , Indy and Violet using our maths story books.

Mrs Crane will end the lesson by bringing the students back to the floor and discuss what they learned today and revisit their success criteria.

What a fabulous lesson Mrs Crane, Mrs Gamble and Stage 1.
