Over the last 5 weeks Stage 2 has been delving deep into the world of Fantastic Mr Fox. As a class we have read and broken down the narrative features that make Roald Dahl an amazing author. Our focus has been on the structure of a narrative; orientation, complication and resolution, and looking specifically at the features that Roald Dahl uses to create impact. In our last week of lessons we are putting our knowledge to the test and writing our own sequel! It is amazing to see the students using their creativity to get our Mr Fox out of trouble time and time again.
Here we can see our class planning and writing their orientations, complications and resolutions. First they brainstormed which characters they would include and where their story would take place.
For the last couple of weeks Stage 2 has been focusing on addition. We have been learning to use different strategies to work out addition problems both mentally and written.
Here we can see Riley and Cash practising their friends of 10 which help immensely with addition problems.
Molly is showing us the associative strategy that tells us that it does not matter which order we add our numbers the answer will always be the same. While Ryder is showing us how to bridge the decade. Using this strategy we use the number bonds of one number to make the other number reach the decade and this makes adding easier. Dougie is demonstrating the compensation strategy where you take from one side and add to the other side to make the numbers easier to add. See below.
Finally we have been doing work with algorithms using no trading and using trading. Look at their amazing work below.
Throughout this second half of this term we have been investigating the Great Journeys of famous explorers from around the world. Our focus has been on those who travelled to Australia and made significant discoveries. In our lesson in the last two weeks we have been independently researching an explorer of our choice. In this task our Stage 2 students have investigated Who, What, Where, How questions that they wanted to discovered about their explorer.
In Science and Technology we have been looking at the Living World. Our stage 2 students have been identifying the difference between living and non-living things, learning to classify different types of living things and identify the features of a life cycle.
Towards the end of this term our stage 2 students put their excellent research skills to action and began to research Bees! They were tasked to discover just how important bees are to our living world.
