Student Leadership at Salvado Catholic College: Nurturing Tomorrow’s Leaders

At Salvado Catholic College, we believe that every student has the potential to be a leader. Throughout their time at the College, students are encouraged and supported to discover, develop, and refine their leadership skills. From participating in team-based activities to holding formal leadership positions, students at Salvado are given the opportunity to contribute to the College’s vision and mission, while developing important interpersonal and relational skills.

Building Leadership Skills from the Start

Leadership at Salvado Catholic College is about more than just holding a title—it’s about learning to collaborate, serve, and inspire others. We value student voice and engagement, ensuring that each student has a pathway to develop their leadership abilities in authentic ways. Leadership roles are integrated into students’ experiences throughout their schooling, starting from their final year of primary school.

In Year 6, all students take on leadership roles, either formally or informally, as they engage in activities that foster a sense of community and responsibility. They are encouraged to reflect on their leadership skills and work together on projects that benefit their peers and the wider College community.

Leadership Formation in Year 5

Leadership formation begins in Year 5, where students are introduced to the concept of leadership and start preparing for formal leadership roles in Year 6. During Term 4, Year 5 students are guided through a series of lessons and activities to build their understanding of leadership:

  • Defining Leadership: Students explore what it means to be a leader, with a focus on Catholic values and servant leadership.
  • Leadership Nomination Process: Students are taught how to complete the Student Leadership Nomination Form and prepare a persuasive speech to address their peers.
  • Public Speaking Skills: Lessons in public speaking help students develop the confidence to present their ideas and leadership vision.
  • Leadership Days: Students may have the opportunity to attend leadership summits, such as the Catholic Primary School Youth Summit, where they can learn from external leaders and bring their new insights back to the classroom.

All students from Junior School watch and listen to the speeches from those nominated and vote with confidentiality. Speeches are recorded and all staff are also invited to vote for the 2025 House Captains positions. As our students grow, we are excited to see how they will lead with compassion and vision, making a lasting impact on their peers, the College, and the wider community.
