KLA Feature - Mathematics
As we reflect on the past year in Mathematics, it is clear that our students have made significant progress. They have faced numerous challenges but have learnt many new concepts along the way and developed essential problem-solving skills. Their journey has been one of continuous growth.
Our main objective at Caroline Chisholm College is to inspire a love and appreciation for mathematics. Enjoyment helps students develop a growth mindset so that they are not afraid of failure. As a result they are hopefully more willing to tackle challenges and tend to persist longer when faced with difficult problems, not only in mathematics but in their everyday lives.
This term students have been exploring concepts through manipulatives and through engaging in creative, hands-on activities. This has been a fun way to finish off a great year of learning.
Parents can play a vital role in helping their child succeed in mathematics. Showing a positive attitude towards mathematics to your daughter is essential as well as emphasising that making mistakes is a natural part of learning. Integrating mathematics into daily activities is an excellent way for parents to support their children in building mental strategies, while also making learning enjoyable and meaningful. Parents could involve their child in cooking and baking, asking them to measure out ingredients; incorporate maths into shopping by encouraging their child to estimate the total cost; use maths in travel by asking their child to calculate travel time and distance; and play games and puzzles at home as a family.
We would like to remind parents to have a conversation with their daughters about utilising the additional support offered by the college. Student have access to Mathematics Workshop and the Maths Online program to supplement their learning.
