La Befana
In the first week of January, Italians celebrate the beloved tradition of La Befana. According to legend, La Befana is an elderly woman who flies on a broomstick during the night between January 5th and 6th, delivering gifts to children.
The story says that the Three Wise Men once invited La Befana to join them on their journey to find the Baby Jesus. Initially, she declined, but later changed her mind and set out to join their quest. However, she was unable to find the baby and ended up giving the gifts she had brought to other children. Ever since, La Befana has traveled on her broomstick every January 5th, continuing her search for the manger while delivering presents to any Italian child who leaves out a shoe or hangs up a stocking on Epiphany Eve. She has come to symbolise kindness.
Today, La Befana remains a popular figure in Italy, with many children hanging stockings in hopes of receiving gifts. This tradition marks the end of the Christmas season in Italy, spreading the joy and magic of the holidays.
Thank you all for your continued support of the Italian program. I wish you a blessed Christmas and a safe holiday with your loved ones. I look forward to a new year filled with learning, fun, and growth as we continue our journey in Italian!
Buon natale!
