At Brighton Primary we know the importance of preparing students for change. Our transition program helps students to understand what to expect as they progress from kindergarten to school, between year levels and from primary to secondary school.

The transition process occurs at each year level as students move through the school. We also coordinate with local secondary schools to help our Grade 6 students prepare for the next stage of their education.

This year our future prep students and current students will participate in 3 sessions as part of our Transition & Orientation Program.

2025 Prep Students

Tues 19th November: Transition session #1 9:30 – 10:15 am
Tues 26th November: Transition session #2 9:30 – 10:15 am
Tues 10th December: Orientation Afternoon 2:15 pm – 3:00 pm

Dates for Grade 6 students moving to Year 7 are dependent on their Secondary School

Our Transition mornings are designed to:

Set the scene for change to the next year level
Provide students with an overview of learning and key milestones they can expect to encounter
Get students used to different areas of the school
Work with different teachers and students
Please note, student groupings for these sessions do not reflect 2025 classes or teachers

Our Orientation afternoon is designed to:

Let students meet their 2025 classmates - as much as possible class lists are finalised by this day
Where possible, meet their 2025 classroom teacher
Engage in activities that will help them prepare for the following school year

Our class placement process aims to establish balanced, equitable classrooms that maximise the learning of all students. The rigorous process involves input on a range of factors from teachers, parents and students through the following steps:

Parents were invited to share information about specific learning needs of their child/ren that they would like to be considered as part of their 2025 class placement by November 1st
School leadership will consider all parent requests carefully and make adjustments to classes where necessary and possible.
Teachers have asked students to write down 3 friend requests to ensure they have at least 1 of these friends in their class next year.
Teachers have input these friendship requests, and their own academic or social/emotional observations of students into a computer program called Class Solver
Class Solver is a program we use to create initial class lists based on multiple requests and factors. Current and past teachers of students, along with school leaders, will provide feedback on these lists to ensure student groupings are appropriate and make adjustments as necessary.
Once class lists are finalised, teachers will be assigned to classes by the school principal and leadership team.
Your child’s best friend may not necessarily be the best person for your child to learn beside in the classroom. Our teacher teams may decide to split friends who distract one another in class. We would ask that you trust the judgement of our teaching teams and support us in helping your child manage any disappointments.

Students find out their 2025 classes on Orientation Afternoon, Tuesday 10th December.

Students not returning to BPS in 2025 still participate in the Transition Sessions however they participate in an alternative learning experience on Orientation afternoon (or attend their future school).
