Year Six - Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families,

A big thank you to everyone who attended the school's Christmas Carols on Tuesday evening. It was wonderful to see such a positive turnout, especially from our Grade Six leaders. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to enjoy their final whole-school event.

Thank you again for your support, and we hope you had a wonderful time!

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students were given a budget of $10,000 and tasked with researching and justifying how they could spend the school funding to benefit the school community. This required students to work collaboratively, researching the costs of their ideas and creating a financial plan to demonstrate that their proposal stayed within the given budget.

How you can help at home:

Encourage your child to practice mental math by asking quick questions during daily activities, like estimating grocery totals or finding price differences on sale items.

English:

We continued reading our class novel, Can You See Me?, reading Chapters 24, 25 and 26.   These chapters deepen students' understanding of themes and characters, fostering empathy and enhancing their awareness of different perspectives and personal experiences. Students continued to independently write persuasive letters after choosing between three potential topics: phones at schools, extended lunch breaks, and social media age restrictions. After drafting their letters, students were required to edit them to ensure they followed the correct structure and incorporated a variety of persuasive language devices.

How you can help at home:

Ask questions about news stories to encourage your child to form and articulate opinions with sound reasoning.

Religious Education:

This week, students participated in the Leadership Mass, which celebrated the tremendous leadership displayed by the Grade Six students this year and introduced our Grade Five students, who will be stepping up to lead the school in 2025.

AUSLAN:

In AUSLAN, students revised the signs for animals . They demonstrated how they could use their facial expressions to change between the narrators and the characters  perspective in a story.

SEL:

Students continued to hone their help-seeking skills with a focus on communication this week.

Integrated Studies:

Students explored different music genres, examining instrumentation and tone color to discover what makes each genre unique and how different instruments contribute to each genre’s sound. Students used the Chrome Music Lab website to create their own mini songs.
