What a GREAT day last Thursday! The Year 5’s visited the Arts Centre, Birrarung Marr, the NGV, ACMI, Carlton Gardens and finished off with a delicious dinner and gelato on Lygon Street. Our vision at Greenhills is for our students to be curious, connected and open to challenge and have a positive impact on the community. Days like this one are perfect examples of us working and striving to deliver this vision.
A special thanks to Sarah Leach and Roberta Iebbiano for their incredible organisation to make this day possible, along with all of their helpers including our Specialist Team, Brad, Sheryl and Ilda.
Vicki Ward, Member for Eltham attended our school assembly last Friday, to present the David McKenzie Award to Opal B from Year 4. The award is named after David McKenzie, who was the Federal Member for Diamond Valley from 1972-1975, as well as an educator and advocate on social justice issues. It is presented to primary school students in our local area who show commitment to social justice, looking after fellow students and who display exemplary leadership qualities. Well done and congratulations Opal.
We congratulate Cooper L for his outstanding achievement in the ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) competition this year. Cooper was awarded a Gold Medal in Year 3 Spelling. This is in recognition of him achieving the top score in the whole year level. This competition is conducted annually in Australia and over 20 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and America so this is an amazing effort Cooper!
We also had a very large number of students participate across a variety of the ICAS subjects. These students were presented with their certificates and recognised at assembly. Well done to all those students who took on this challenge.
Just a reminder that over next two weeks, all families will receive a mid-term email update from their child’s classroom teacher. This is part of our home school communications plan which includes two or three emails per term along with our Continuous Reporting, Greenhills Official Facebook page, Two Minute Tuesdays and other regular contact. Our aim is to ensure that the information you need to know is communicated in a timely and effective way.
Our Family Fun Education Evening will again have a special positive transition focus this year. This is your chance to participate in your child’s education and find out a little bit more about what 2025 might look like! We will launch into the fun and activity at 6.30pm and your challenge is to complete 3 different 15 x minute sessions in the classrooms your child/ren will be in 2025. For example, our current Year 1 students will be able to join in with their parents through 3 different Year 2 activities, all of approx. 15 minutes so that we finish at 7.30pm.
An outline listing each of the sessions will be included in the newsletter next week and if you have any questions about this event, please contact me: james.penson@education.vic.gov.au
As a thank you to all parents, grandparents and carers who do a wonderful job helping at the school we are holding a thankyou afternoon tea on Tuesday 3rd December from 3pm – 4pm in the Library. The invitation is open to all parents or grandparents or family members who have helped in any way this year. There is no doubt that without such amazing community support we would not be able to achieve what we do. If you are unable to attend, we thank you for your contribution and commitment to Greenhills Primary School during 2024.
