Spotlight on Learning

Focus on Turtle Pod

This term in science, students have been developing their understanding and knowledge of the material world around them. Through engaging and hands-on activities, students will build an awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of materials and apply that knowledge to building their very own recycled home for the dog Three!

To kick off our exciting design project, students in Turtle first worked on sorting materials into recycled and non-recycled categories. This activity helped them learn to identify different types of materials and understand the importance of recycling. By discussing their choices, students became more aware of how everyday items can be reused, reducing waste and protecting our environment.

Next, students were challenged to design a house for Dog Three from the text 'Three'. They used their creativity to sketch out their ideas, thinking critically about what features would make a comfortable and sustainable home for a dog. This task encouraged them to use their imaginations while considering the materials they would use in their final creations.

Finally, students began the exciting process of constructing their houses using the recycled materials they collected. They combined their knowledge from the sorting activity and design phase to bring their ideas to life. Working together, they learned about teamwork and problem-solving as they built their unique homes for Three.

As we continue our focus on the material world, we encourage you to help your child at home by looking at the materials used in everyday life. Students in Turtle have thoroughly enjoyed understanding which materials can be recycled and which materials cannot. This is a lifelong concept for all of us to create a sustainable world.
