Grace Stevenson - Arts Technician

With help from The Smith Family, several students from Years 8, 9 and 10 had the opportunity to take part in the SmArts program at Spacecraft Studios. The SmArts program provides students with the opportunity to experience the world of Art and Design Projects firsthand in a meaningful and inspiring way. In this four-day program, students were able to participate in hands on workshops in the studio, allowing them to explore their creative passions and interests led by industry professionals. At the beginning of the program, students visited the National Gallery of Victoria, gaining inspiration for their own fashion projects. Over the four days, the students were taught printing and sewing techniques to transform a collection of second-hand garments into personal design statements. On the last day, the students worked with professional fashion photographers, models and stylists to photograph their new clothing. The project intends to celebrate the lead role young people play in driving fashion change.

Students were impressed by the amount of creative freedom they had and enjoyed learning about screen printing techniques in a professional studio setting. One student, Garang Garang, Year 9, said that he could see himself screen printing in the future. Another student, Shaneisha Chellapen, Year 9, was inspired by the studio setting and enjoyed seeing a professional design studio for the first time
