What's happening in Term 2 - Week 4

Premiers' Reading Challenge

Congratulations to our top 5 readers this week!

  • Braxton R - 90 books
  • Braxton S  - 71 books
  • Evelyn & Walter S -  63 books
  • Raymond W - 56 books
  • Olivia W - 50 books

Our leading level is Year 3!  Well done to 3B reading 180 books!  A total of 1056 books have been read across the school and 196 reviews have been published!

Please remember to keep your individual PRC page updated with the books you have read – it doesn’t take long!  It would be fabulous to see every student participating in the challenge and broadening their reading experiences.

National Simultaneous Story Time

We were delighted to receive an email last week from the ALIA to inform us the Library had won a signed copy of the Bowerbird Blues book!

We entered a competition last month by answering the following:

Bowerbirds make three different kinds of bowers. What are they and how are they each constructed?

Our answer:

A bower is not actually a nest but rather architecture!

The three main types of bower are:

  • a cleared area with a domed tunnel of sticks wide enough for the bird to pass through and sometimes is painted with vegetable juices
  • a display court with large leaves that are laid upside down or tiled with rocks
  • a maypole which uses a sapling as a central tower including an assortment of vegetation packed around the base, it can have a roof and is sometimes several feet tall

The male can spend a week to two months getting his bower in order whether he is refurbishing or building a new one.  Some bowers have been maintained for more than 30 years.  Once a bower is complete the male adds the decorative touches; seeds, pebbles, snail shells, berries, ferns, dead beetles, flowers, webbing, bones, leaves, cloth, plastic, foil, glass - things discarded by us humans!

The Great Book Swap

While the event does not take place until Thursday 5th September we have started our book donation drive!  A basket has been placed in the office foyer for you to leave donations until a week before the event.  We kindly ask that you only donate books in good condition and suitable reading for Primary aged students. Library Captains, Bailey, Michael, Felix and Zoe will be checking the donations regularly and sorting them into appropriate age levels.
