Good Afternoon Parents Students, Staff and Friends of Derinya,

It has been a delight to see our students return to school with enthusiasm and excitement. All classes have very quickly settled back into routine and I am consistently impressed with our students diligent commitment to their learning. Celebrating achievement and growth is something I feel we do well at our school and something to be proud of.

Little Learners Love Literacy

This year one of our major areas of focus is the implementation of a systematic synthetic phonics approach to the teaching of reading and spelling. In years P-2 as children are learning to read, this approach works on systematically introducing letters and sounds sequentially, ensuring students are set up for success. The feedback from students, teachers and parents has been overwhelmingly positive with confidence accelerating very quickly. Teachers have been heavily invested in their own learning participating in the LaTrobe SOLAR Research Study as well as Little Learners Love Literacy training and our recent professional development day with Lyn Stone, local consultant and linguistics expert. Further information will be provided this evening via a half hour session online via Webex. All families are welcome to login at 7pm by clicking on this link https://eduvic.webex.com/meet/pugh.zoe.l

Lost Property

It is fantastic to have a location for our lost property but unfortunately at the minute, it is overflowing with many items some of which are named. We have a fabulous parent who has volunteered to assist with this, but we really need a team who can spend a half hour or so one afternoon a week to sort through and return to classrooms. If you are able to help out any assistance would be gratefully received. Please register your interest by email me directly Nadine.Pye@education.vic.gov.au

Staffing Announcement

This week our Business Manager Lynn Sanders has commenced long service leave with the intent or retiring later in the year. Lynn has been a loyal and committed member of the Derinya Community for many years and has been a great friend and wonderful employee. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lynn very much for her service and wish her all the best for this next exciting chapter.

For the remainder of the year Tina Ramsay will be acting in the Business Manager’s role and Kellie Jovic will be acting in the role of Office Manager. This week we also welcome Taylor Dowie to the team. Taylor will be working with us on a Monday, Tuesday and Friday.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend ahead and a fantastic term.

Kind Regards,

Nadine Pye on behalf of the Derinya team
