News from the Drama Program

What a fantastic Term 1 we’ve had in Drama, and Term 2 is off to an awesome start.

I am really enjoying getting to know the Grade 4 students who, last term, worked with sound and movement in their explorations of human machines and environments. We made some creative worlds in the jungle, on the moon and in the Australian desert. This term we are trying out different improvisation challenges to develop spontaneity and ‘logic-building’ skills. The students have been enthusiastic and showed excellent teamwork in their groups. Well done to everyone.

In Grade 5 last term we worked on making strong, clear narratives in our dramas. Students created work in response to spoken and picture stories, and a ‘borrowed then reinterpreted’ storyline. This term we’re developing group dramas for a performance at the end of term. Each class will choose a different theme and will work with props and costume.

In Grade 6 Drama we focused on creating original characters and challenging ourselves to try things outside of our comfort zones for the first term. Students practised changing their physicality, voice and personality to create characters who were different ages or worked in different jobs. This term we’re building on our clear narrative-making skills for our dramas, retelling Aboriginal stories, and also creating original scenes in response to a given theme or title. Its terrific to see how far their work has come since Grade 4.
