Exploring the World of Science at KSC

Science has always been a gateway to understanding the mysteries of the universe, and this term has been nothing short of extraordinary for our school community. From engaging classroom experiments, to an exciting Science Week, and unforgettable excursions, our students have delved into the wonders of science in ways that spark curiosity and ignite passion.

Classroom Discoveries

The Science classrooms have been buzzing with activity as students tackled hands-on experiments and interactive lessons. Year 7 students step into the world of Science, their first lesson begins with understanding the importance of safety in the laboratory. Year 7 students also dove into the fascinating web of life that surrounds us. Ecology teaches them how plants, animals, and humans interact within ecosystems.

Biology enthusiasts in Year 8 got up close and personal with plant and animal cells through microscope work, discovering the intricate structures that make life possible.

Year 9 delved into electricity, building circuits and testing conductivity, which brought physics to life.

Meanwhile, Year 10 students have been unravelling the secrets of genetics, learning how the blueprint for all living organisms is stored in DNA and exploring the building blocks of matter in chemistry.

These experiments are not just about learning concepts—they are about developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, setting a strong foundation for future scientific endeavours.

Science Week Extravaganza

Our annual Science Week was a roaring success, themed " ‘Species Survival – More Than Just Sustainability’."

The week kicked off with an excursion that allowed Year 8 students to develop an appreciation of sustainability in agriculture. Students swapped stories with farmers and industry experts.

Year 10 students studied chemical energy in combustion reactions. Tim Perret, a pyrotechnic expert, spoke with students and demonstrated about the versatile uses of explosives including fireworks.

Year 9 students presented at their local primary school sharing their passion for science. The students had the challenge of designing mini science activities that they taught grade 1 & 2 students. They create a science expo that was informative, interactive and fun. The grand finale was firing water rockets.

Year 7 students participated in workshops run by Burra Foods. Glitter Bugs was an insight into the importance of health and safety linked to hygiene practices like washing your hands. Butter making had students shaking jars of cream until it became butter. Science Week 2024 - a thrilling celebration of curiosity, creativity, and discovery!

Science Fair Highlights: Chemistry Meets Anatomy in Winning Project!

The annual Like Minds Science Fair was a roaring success, showcasing the incredible creativity and curiosity of our students. The highlight of the Science Fair,  where students showcased their own projects. From a wind tunnel demonstration, getting hands on with microscopes to innovative eco-friendly solutions, the creativity and effort on display were truly inspiring. The judges faced a tough decision. Among dozens of impressive projects, one stood out for its innovative approach and fascinating results: the winning project on the effects of chemicals on bones.

The project has sparked interest among peers and inspired many to think creatively about their own scientific inquiries. Let’s keep asking questions and making discoveries—who knows what next year’s winning idea will be?

Excursions - Exploring the Wonders of Science at GTAC

Many of our students, Year 7 – 12, embarked on an exciting science excursion to the Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC) in Parkville. Renowned for its cutting-edge facilities and focus on making science accessible to young learners, GTAC provided an unforgettable day of discovery and hands-on learning.

What truly set this excursion apart was the opportunity to use professional tools and methods usually reserved for researchers. From micropipettes to electrophoresis chambers and robotics, we gained a taste of the technologies used to solve global challenges.

Students also had the chance to interact with GTAC’s resident scientists, who shared stories of their career paths and the groundbreaking projects they’re involved in. It was inspiring to see how science can lead to impactful careers addressing environmental and health issues.

The Impact of Science at Our School

What makes science special at our school is its ability to go beyond textbooks and connect students to real-world issues. This year, we’ve seen students grow not only in their scientific knowledge but also in their sense of wonder and responsibility toward our planet. Whether in the lab, at the Science Fair, or on excursions, the enthusiasm has been contagious.

We look forward to more experiments, discoveries, and innovations in the coming years. Here’s to continuing our journey of exploring the limitless possibilities of Science!
