OUTDOOR EDUCATION
This year, the Semester 2 Year 9 Outdoor Education class took their learning to a new level! To prepare the students for their outdoor experiences, they began the semester learning how to be safe in the outdoors. They then took an in depth look at Marine National Parks within Victoria. The students experienced a variety of lessons, with theory and introductory lessons in the classroom, and then brought their learning outside during their practical experiences. Practical experiences included those within the school grounds and select journeys in the outdoors, within South Gippsland and beyond.
Some highlights of the semester were:
They discovered how to sail their own boat at the Victorian Sailing School in Geelong. This three-day trip developed students sailing skills, but also focussed on teamwork and independence.
The class explored the George Bass Coastal Walk, where they learned about hiking as a group and surf hazards. The group also volunteered with the Bass Coast Landcare Network to put plants in the ground at their River Garden in Bass.
They teamed up with the Unit 1 & 2 Outdoor and Environmental Studies class to test their nerve and develop their teamwork skills while participating in adventurous activities at PGL Camp Rumbug.
To culminate their learning for the semester, an adventure seeking group of students headed to Wilson’s Promontory National Park and had the most radical surfing session followed by watching sunset on the summit of Mt Oberon. They also demonstrated their hiking skills with a day walk out to the exposed Tongue Point.
A huge shout out to all the staff at KSC that accompanied the students and assisted in making their practical experiences possible.
Shakas,
Ms Kordus
