SALT Construction Workshop
We recently had the pleasure of hosting Supporting And Linking Tradeswomen (SALT) for a construction workshop aimed at teaching our young women more about their opportunities as possible future trades-people.
School-age girls and women across Australia will have the opportunity to try a trade and learn basic tool skills as SALT travels across Australia over the next couple of years.
SALT, in conjunction with the National Careers Institute, is running workshops over seven weeks in May and June 2024 in South Australia, Northern Territory and the Far North Kimberleys to encourage young women to consider a career in a trade.
The coordinator of the program, Fi Shewring, said the workshops are aimed at encouraging girls to consider a trade career and also to get local employers thinking about taking on more women as apprentices in industries that are traditionally male dominated.
“The workshops are run by experienced tradespeople, and aim to give young women an idea of what it takes to be a tradeswoman and the myriad of job opportunities available,” Fi Shewring said.
“Students are given hands-on experience of tools used in most trades and gain great skills which will help them in the future for their own lives.
The tradespeople also mentor the students about making positive career choices which will enable them to earn a reasonable wage and build their self-esteem and confidence."
