Exciting News for the Mazenod Hockey Club

Message from Mazenod Hockey Club President, Neil Connan.

I'm thrilled to announce that our hockey club has decided to join forces with the Curtin University Hockey Club (CUHC)! This move opens a world of opportunities for our boys to enhance their skills and elevate their game. While providing CUHC with junior male representation at 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12 age groups, this arrangement formalises the pathway into senior hockey for Mazenod boys.

There are numerous advantages to Mazenod, but they are mainly centered around the following two points that have presented significant challenges for the club:

  • Free turf hire for training sessions at the Perth Hockey Stadium (PHS) - The HQ for Hockey WA and Hockey Australia.
  • Access to an expanded coaching and volunteer base, including specialist training sessions.

The committee voted unanimously to combine with CUHC. We feel that this arrangement guarantees the future of hockey at Mazenod and is in the best interests of the Mazenod boys who are at the forefront of driving this decision. This move also has the full support of the College.

An extract from an email sent by Hockey WA, supporting this arrangement:

  • There will be no impact to the players' registration status with Hockey Australia, the current registration is unaffected.
  • The Mazenod teams will play in their current uniform with CUHC socks for the 2024 season.
  • Hockey WA has as of 3rd May changed the names of teams in REVO for all fixtures going forward.

This is seen as an ideal move by both of the parties involved, there will be player numbers (juniors) included as part of Curtin University Hockey Club.  The junior players at Mazenod College Hockey Club will benefit from an enhanced level of coaching by players from Curtin University Hockey Club.

What happens next?

  • Whilst our name will now appear as “Curtin University” in the Hockey WA match fixtures, we will still be playing in the Mazenod uniform and we will still proudly cheer for Mazenod from the sidelines!
  • Over the next week or two we will hand out CUHC socks (free of charge) to the boys which will be worn during games.
  • We will aim to relocate our training from SRHC to PHS asap, or as soon as the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos leave for the Paris Olympics. This will be coordinated and done on a team-by-team basis with plenty of communication and advance notice.

Our fixtures and results can be seen here (Curtin University):

Once again, the committee firmly believes that this collaboration is in the best interest of the Mazenod College boys. I encourage you to share in our excitement as we embark on this new chapter. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Thank you for your continued support.

Specialist Goalie Training

Curtin University is currently hosting a goalkeeper program, and our boys are fortunate enough to be a part of it. Tasmania state player, Evie Dalton, is leading the training sessions. Having a goalkeeper of Evie's calibre guiding our goalkeepers is an incredible opportunity for them to learn from the best and further refine their techniques.

Our goalies, Clinton and James, were up at dawn on Tuesday morning. Despite the early hours, they were up and eager, dedicating themselves to an hour of training before the start of their school day. This level of commitment and enthusiasm is commendable and speaks volumes about their dedication to improving their skills.
