Term 4 - Toonworld and Scienceworks STEM incursions and excursions!
Our Grade 3/4 students have had a very busy end of the term with a range of STEM incursions and exscursions!
Last Thursday, 4th December students participated in a stop-motion incursion, run by Toonworld. Students worked in small groups and were asked to create storyboards, including different types of shots. They used an assigned setting and as a group developed a range of characters and props using animating clay to bring their story to life. They and took on different roles like film makers do, including moving the characters and props and photographing their short sequence. They were also asked to add voice over. Students had a great time and the skills they gained and the experiences they had in this session were applied in their Expo group’s short Stop Motion movies!

As part of further STEM exploration this term our students travelled to Scienceworks on Wednesday 10th December. Students participated in a range of exciting activities throughout the day!
Planetarium:
Students viewed a movie about the changing seasons and had the opportunity to observe the stars and solar system in the Planetarium.

Robots and Coding:
Our Grade 3/4s visited the STEM learning lab to learn about coding robots using the application M Blocks. Students learned basic commands for movement and lights, as well as programming commands for their own obstacle courses!

General Viewing and Exploring:
They also had the opportunity to explore the attractions and participate in interactive exhibits in the general viewing area. This was broken into two main sections, ‘Think Ahead’ an area dedicated to the innovation of science and technology over history, and ‘Sportsworks’ which was all about our health and sports science.

Sportsworks

Our students shared lots of positive feedback following their day at Scienceworks. Here are a few of their reflections:
- Ingrid 3/4K - My favourite thing was about doing the coding for the robots because you could make obstacles for it and tell it what to do
- Helena 3/4K - I liked the general viewing because you could explore. I liked racing Cathy Freeman!

- Domenico 3/4T - I really liked it and I think it was really interesting. The thing I liked the most was exploring the exhibition.
- Lucas V 3/4T - The planetarium was very cool. The seat can lean back and was very comfy. I was surprised the toilets were very clean.
- Freya 3/4T - Overall the day was great!
- Elva 3/4T - I l liked the robots and the free time!
- Elsa 3/4P - I liked looking at the Sports Works. I had a go at wheelchair racing and I was against Jacey.
- Jacey 3/4P - I loved doing wheelchair racing with Elsa and doing the rock climbing!
- Jasper 3/4P - The planetarium was my favourite because the animation was cool!
- Henry 3/4P - The movie at the planetarium was realistic so that was the best bit!
It was a great day out at Scienceworks!
We look forward to sharing our movies and seeing all our Grade 3/4 families at our upcoming Expo, on Friday 12 December 3.00pm!
Wishing you and your families a very safe and enjoyable festive period! See you in 2026!
