Platypus Classroom

Literacy

This fortnight students are continuing to focus on the conventions of fairy tales. For examples, they have looked at the traditional events leading up to the resolution and ending of fairy tales and practiced re-writing an ending to make it less traditional. They also compared how the same fairy tale written by different author's differ and discussed reason for this such as audience and time of publication.

In writing, they have practiced using figurative language such as idioms and hyperbole to add description to their characters and events.

Maths

In maths this fortnight, Platypus students have been exploring chance and probability. Stage 2 students have been looking at identifying the possible outcomes in games of chance and discussing whether games are 'fair'.  They explored this in dice games and with coins.

In Stage 3, students played the familiar game of Scissors, Paper , Rock and determined whether the game is fair. They explored expected outcomes over different trial sets and then analysed the results. They then repeated the game but using dice to investigate if this game of 'chance' was influenced by strategies. Students were very engaged with all activities and often surprised by the results.
