FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Term 4 Week 8

Welcome to Week 8 everyone,

This week's Principal's address is written by Nate Drury, our Year 6 student who was elected as Principal for a Day.

On the 2nd of December, 2025 we had our ‘Principal For A Day’. On this day one of the Year 6 students gets to be the Principal for the Day. You get to see behind the scenes and pretty much get to hang out with Mr Flynn for the day. To enter you have to write a letter of application stating why you think you should be the principal. After this about 6 people get selected to have an interview. On the interview panel was Mrs Daley, Mrs Dunst and two student representatives from Year 5. Then one person is chosen to be the Principal for the day. I, Nate was the winning candidate.

My day started with greeting students at the gate before going to Year 4 with Mr Flynn for guided reading groups. Then Mrs Daley and I went for a ‘learning walk’ (I’ll explain more later) through the Hive, except they were having their fruit break so it was more of a wander around to see what's happening. A learning walk is when you go for a walk around the classrooms and ask a handful of students the 5 learning questions: What are you learning? How are you going? How do you know? Where can you go for help? And what next (how to improve)? They should be able to tell you the learning intention and the success criteria. I then had a meeting with Mr Unwin (from the ACS) on data from NAPLAN and PAT testing. I also got to do a bit of guided reading with Mrs Doyle in Year 2. This brought me to first break (in the staff room).

After I had eaten, Mrs Dunst and I went on infants duty. We walked around the oval making sure the kids were doing the right thing. Mrs O'Sullivan and I did a ‘Maths Sprint’ with Year 2. We took a group of students that needed a bit of extra support in maths and did some NAPLAN and PAT questions with them and explained how to figure it out. When we came back there was a meeting on, so I worked on this newsletter section. This brought me to second break.

The afternoon was a bit more relaxed, first I had a meeting with Mr Flynn to discuss my ideas for school improvement. After I did some more work on this letter and called Mr O’Connor about a shade sail that was broken in the storm. We discussed the best option for repairing this.  Then I went on a walk around the school with Mr Flynn. We had a look at the PLT room and contemplated what to do with the unused ‘Seminar room’. Then my day was over and I went home.
