Curriculum Updates
Term 4 (Second Half)
As we move into the second half of Term 4, our teaching teams have prepared updated Curriculum Overviews outlining the learning taking place across all year levels. These documents give families a clear picture of the key skills, knowledge and understandings being taught in classrooms, and they help strengthen the important partnership between home and school.
Across the school, students are engaging in rich reading, writing and spelling programs, building their Maths fluency and problem-solving skills, and deepening their knowledge through our History and Geography units. Each year level is working with carefully selected novels that support vocabulary growth, comprehension and a love of reading. Students are also learning and practising specific sounds, spelling rules and morphology through our PhOrMeS approach, and these patterns will appear regularly in the words and texts they are using in class.
In Maths, students are exploring a sequence of number, measurement and geometry concepts based on explicit instruction and plenty of practice. These upcoming topics are included in the updates so families can see what is being learned and talk with their children about their progress. Likewise, our History and Geography units give students the chance to build important background knowledge these final weeks of term, and we encourage families to read through these focus areas and discuss them at home.
One of the most powerful ways families can support learning is simply by talking with children about what they are reading, the sounds and spelling rules they are working on, and the Maths concepts they are practising. Encouraging students to review their notes, revisit a chapter from their class novel or explain something new they learned in History or Geography helps them consolidate and “go deeper” with that knowledge.
We hope these Curriculum Updates give you a clear and helpful picture of the learning ahead. Thank you for your ongoing support and for the many ways you help reinforce the strong, evidence-based teaching happening every day at SKiPPS.
