Prep News

Term 3, Week 6

What we've been up to in Prep!

Book Week

We had a wonderful week celebrating Book Week last week! We loved having families come in to read with us, and getting to do an activity with our buddies on Monday. On Friday, we had the best day dressing up as our favourite book characters!

Big Write

We love Big Write day! The students all show us all of the things they have learnt during this session, it is our favourite part of the fortnight!

Upcoming Dates

Friday 5th September: Ballarat Wildlife Park Excursion; please see event on Compass to provide payment and consent.

Thursday 11th September: SRC whole school Pyjama Day to raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital (gold coin donation).

Upcoming Learning

Literacy

In week 7, we will be learning about the sound that /ch/ and /tch/makes and reading the book Ruby Roars. In week 8, we will be learning about the sound that /th/ makes and reading Edward the Emu.

Our heart words will be 'you' and 'said'.

Here are some activities that you can do at home to assist your child to learn these sounds:

1. Sound Detective

  • Write words that have /ch/ and /th/ e.g. chip, chin, chest, bench, lunch, match, thin, thumb, think, thank, thump
  • Mix up /ch/ and /th/ word cards
  • Your child has to be a "Sound Detective" and sort them into two groups, by reading them.

2. Silly Sentences

  • Help them create silly sentences like:
    • “The cheese thief threw a chair.”
    • “Chad thought the chip was thin.”
  • Draw a picture of the sentence together!

Mathematics

In week 7 and 8, we will be revising and continuing our understanding of addition.

Here are some activities that you can do at home to assist your child with this concept:

🃏 1. Card Addition

Supplies: Deck of cards (only use number cards, first use 1-6 and then add higher numbers).

How to Play:

Each player turns over two cards.

Add the numbers, by saying the highest number in your head and counting on the smallest number e.g. 5->  6, 7

Say the equation aloud by saying e.g. five and two makes seven.

🎯 2. Target Toss Addition

Supplies: Paper plates, markers, bean bags or rolled-up socks.

How to Play:

Label plates/pieces of paper with numbers (1–10) and spread them out.

Toss two socks and add the numbers they land on, by saying the biggest number first, then counting on the smallest number e.g. 5->  6, 7

Say the equation aloud by saying e.g. five and two makes seven.

🧮 3. Build It with Blocks

Supplies: LEGO or counting blocks.

How to Play:

Build two towers (e.g., 4 blocks + 6 blocks).

Count how many blocks altogether.

Write or say the equation together.

🖐️ 4. Finger Addition

No supplies needed!

You each hold up some fingers.

Ask: “How many fingers do we have together?”

📚 5. Story Problems

Example: “You have 4 apples. I give you 3 more. How many apples do you have now?”

Act out or draw the stories to help solve them.

Topic

In week 7 and 8, we will be learning all about marsupials and birds.

In Respectful Relationships we will be learning about Help Seeking by talking about who our helpers are at school.
