Loddon Mallee Regional Champs!

Congratulations to our Girls hockey and soccer teams who both won the LM Regional Championships in their respective sports over recent weeks. Both competitions were held at Swan Hill’s Ken Harrison Reserve. The girls will now progress to the State Finals in Melbourne over the coming weeks. To have one team in a State Final is a wonderful effort, so to have 2 teams in the same year is a remarkable achievement.

LM Hockey Championships

The LM Region Hockey tournament was held on Thursday. The girls were clearly the most dominant team on the day, remaining undefeated and not conceding any goals against.

They won their Round Robin games against Boort (4-0), Irymple South (9-0) and Victorian Christian College Swan Hill (2-0).

The final against Boort was a great contest with neither team able to score. Despite multiple shots on goal from our girls the Boort defence held up strongly, denying all attempts. Even after extra time, the scores were still locked at 0-0, however a superior performance during the Round Robin games meant that our girls were named deserving champions.

They now progress to the State Final on Thursday the 11th of September at the Footscray Hockey Complex.

I would sincerely like to thank Narelle Dalley for coaching the girls and preparing them for the tournament. Narelle has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to hockey, and the girls have certainly improved a lot in a small amount of time. I would also like to thank Deb Lomas who travelled up to Swan Hill with the girls to support them as referee. Deb has no direct connection to our school, however is a hockey enthusiast who was prepared to give up her own time to support our team.

LM Soccer Championship

Just like our hockey team, our Girls soccer team dominated the LM Region competition. They were also undefeated throughout the day and did not concede a goal.

In their Round Robin games, they had convincing wins against Echuca East (2-0), Swan Hill (8-0) and Mildura South (2-0).

The final against Castlemaine North was a much closer game and despite our girls having the better chances and controlling general play - they were unable to score in normal time. With the scores locked at 0-0 after full time, the game went to extra time ‘Golden Goal’. A long range goal from Gen M in the first minute of extra time sent the girls into wild celebrations and secured their place in the State Final. This final will be held at the Darebin International Sports Centre on the 3rd of September.

I would sincerely like to thank Michelle ’Billsy’ Maher for coaching this team. The improvement that the girls have made – both to their individual skills and to overall team structure has been outstanding.

All of the girls have displayed amazing skill, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout these tournaments and we are extremely proud of their achievements thus far. We wish them all the best for the State Finals.
