Maths Challenge

Congratulations to Grade 1/2  Edwards for winning this fortnight's Maths Challenge!

Here is our next Maths Challenge for the term!

What we are learning...

Over the past fortnight, students have enjoyed engaging with reading in a variety of ways. We began with Book Week, where students read and reviewed shortlisted picture books.

In class, we explored Meet Captain Cook, practising key reading skills such as recalling important facts, answering literal and inferential questions with evidence, and completing comprehension tasks independently.

To spark curiosity, we posed the questions “What do you know about Captain Cook?” and “What do you wonder about him?” before beginning research into explorers and their national days as part of our topic project. Students are now learning to locate key dates and symbols linked to their chosen explorer’s national day, building both their research and comprehension skills.

In Applied Mathematics, students have been learning to read and plot coordinates to locate and describe positions on a map. They have practised reading coordinates accurately, plotting points on a grid, and using these to give directions.

We also explored transformations, learning to describe movements using the terms slide (translation) and turn (rotation). Working collaboratively, students applied these concepts to solve open-ended movement challenges, building both their problem-solving and teamwork skills.

In Problem Solving, students have been investigating number and shape patterns. They practised continuing simple patterns, identifying and describing the rules using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. Students also created their own patterns and explained the rules behind them, developing clear mathematical thinking and communication skills.

BOOKWEEK:

Bendigo Writers Festival Excursion:

Our eager writers recently enjoyed an inspiring excursion to the Bendigo Writers Festival. Students had the opportunity to hear from a range of talented authors who shared their stories, ideas, and writing journeys. The festival sparked plenty of excitement and fresh inspiration for our own budding authors. Alongside the literary events, we also managed to fit in some sightseeing around Bendigo, making it a memorable and enriching day for all. A big thank you to Miss Ingram for organising this event

Melbourne Renegades:

Next Friday, the 29th of August, our school has been selected to take part in the 2025 Melbourne Renegades Roadshow. All 3-4 students will be invited to participate in a 60-minute clinic from 9.45am with visitors from the Renegades club.

Please note: the Melbourne Renegades’ Communications Team will be attending the event and may want to capture photos and/or content featuring players interacting with students. The club has requested that parents complete the Image Consent Form linked below if they are comfortable with their children being included in such media. The digital form provides permission for images and footage to be captured during the Melbourne Renegades Roadshow.

The club understands and respects the importance of privacy and school-specific protocols around media consent and their team is committed to working with our school to ensure all procedures are followed and the experience is enjoyable for all involved.

Thank you to Mr Smith who has arranged for this very special opportunity for our students.
