Languages Week
At Plenty Valley Christian College, we are incredibly proud of the diverse languages spoken within our school community. Last week, the secondary school embraced our multicultural heritage by acknowledging the wonderful cultural attributes our students inherit from their families and the broader college community.
Throughout the week, the students took part in a variety of lunchtime activities celebrating the Italian language, offered at PVCC from Years 3-VCE as part of our languages program. Activities included traditional Italian card games, making take-home Arancini packs and showing off their soccer skills like a true Italian.
A highlight of the week was a delicious pizza lunch, authentically made by Franco from Cucina Avanti, a true old-school Italian pizzaiolo. The students gladly ate their way through a nonna amount of pizza- and there was strictly no pineapple in sight!
On Friday we welcomed a special guest, Luigi Zucchini, who performed a bilingual Italian English show full of Illusions, unicycling and the classic ‘rabbit out of a hat’ trick, in fact there were rabbits, doves and guinea pigs. Signor Zucchini shared his powerful message students about languages and culture to the students.
"There’s something really magical about using another language. It’s often an opportunity we take for granted, but don’t be shy — have fun with different languages and words, because they open doors to people, places, and opportunities."
Lots of discussion took place amongst our school community over the week about our culture and how blessed we are to belong to a multicultural society. As part of our morning staff devotions, members of staff also shared prayers in Greek, Arabic, Korean and Mandarin reflecting the beautiful linguistic diversity within our community.
Thank you to our amazing school community, who embraced the week so enthusiastically. A special thanks also goes to all staff members who contributed their time, creativity, and energy to make Languages Week such a meaningful and memorable experience for our students. We look forward to 2025. Grazie e arrivederci. See you then!
