French

What a wonderful term we have had so far in French! Moriac students have all been working hard to practice grammar, vocabulary and songs and they have been doing some excellent speaknig and listening in class.

Prep

Prep students have been learning to talk about their likes and dislikes. We used picture dictionaries and sentence starters to write about their preferences. Preps have also been learning different nursery rhymes and vocabulary that goes along with them. Recently, we listened to the Elephant Song, which teachers counting. We have also looked at how the word elephant in French (éléphant) is spelled the same as in English, but it sounds different when you pronounce it.

Below is some work students have created using the numbers in the Elephant song.

Grade 1/2

Grade 1/2 students have been exploring vocabulary related to the weather and clothing. We have looked at the different clothing we would wear in different weather, and explored some of the French speaking world. Students looked at where the countries were on a map of the worlds and we discussed what the weather and climate would be in those countries. For example, Haiti is a French speaking country in the Caribbean and has a tropical climate. France is in Europe and has a Temperate climate. Vanuatu, one of Australia's neighbours, is in the Pacific Ocean and also has a tropical Climate. Mali is on the north west coast of Africa and has a hot, desert climate. Students then thought about what items of clothing they would take on holiday to different French speaking countries, based on their weather and climate.

Grade 3/4

Grade 3/4 students have been learning about giving and receiving directions in French. We started the term off by learning about places you find in the town, such as l'hôpital (the hospital) or la boulangerie (the bakery). We then looked at directional words such as allez tout droit (go straight ahead) or building sentences such as prenez la troisième rue à gauche (take the third street on your left). Students are now in the process of making their town maps and writing directions to move a person around their town. They have done lots of writing and lots of speaking and listening activities during this term!

Grade 5/6

Students in Grade 5/6 have been putting together personal profiles, writing information about themselves using a range of sentence starters, online translators and word banks. They will be publishing their work soon on Seesaw - stay tuned!
