Year 3/4

Upcoming events:
Wednesday, August 3rd- Sovereign Hill Excursion
Friday, August 5th- Father's Day Stall
Thursday, August 11th- R U OK Day?
Literacy:
Our Literacy skills have continued to grow through our reading, writing and spelling. We have completed our class novel “The Iron Man” which has aided the students' learning with developing visualising, inference and vocabulary. Students also researched and wrote facts about iron. Students have continued to work on their cursive handwriting and have started to notice their improvement with everyday practice.
Maths:
We have continued our work with fractions. Students have created fraction walls in their work books to aid their understanding of how different fractions look against one another. We have spent many lessons plotting fractions on parallel number lines and comparing which fractions are bigger and smaller. We have also explored proper, improper and mixed fractions to expand our knowledge and understanding of fractions.
After finishing off fractions in week 5, our 3/4 students have now begun looking at measurement. This has involved looking at length, area, mass and capacity.
To reinforce learning at home students could;
Look at food packaging—discuss grams and kilograms. “Which cereal box is heavier?”
Weigh flour, sugar and measure liquids.
Use a ruler, tape measure, or even hand spans to measure furniture, toys, or doorways.
Humanities:
Students have continued learning about The First Fleet and have begun to look at the Indigenous peoples perspective. Exploring what life was like for all during this time in Australian history has been an eye opening experience for many of the children.
Students have also started investigating local knowledge and history. We have begun to explore Moriac history by looking at photos, maps and stories noticing changes that have occurred over time. Students are encouraged to talk to someone they know in the community and ask them what changes they have noticed about Moriac from the past to present.
4R’s/Moriac Way:
During this time we have looked at our emotions and how they make other people feel. Students have been given a range of emotions and completed activities such as acting out scenarios, discussing a time when they have felt that emotion and how it affected others. We have also looked at different emotions that we feel in the playground and in the classroom, knowing that it is ok to feel all these emotions.
Footy Clinic:
Jeremy Cameron, Bailey Smith and Rhys Stanley from the Geelong Cats visited us for a football clinic. They showed us some of their AFL skills alongside signing clothing items and posters whilst answering some interesting questions from students. It was fantastic to see the children meet and talk to some of their idols.
Spelling Bee:
Many students participated in the school spelling bee. It was fantastic to see so many students have a go and wear their house colours. Support for each other was high and everyone was blown away by the incredible words spelt by all the students! Congratulations to our spelling bee champions, Guinevere Donovan and Ellery Holmes and to all students that participated.
Tree Planting:
The Year 4 and Sustainability Leaders had a wonderful and windy time planting 550 trees at Lake Modewarrre. We are so proud of this achievement, they all worked so hard in windy conditions.
