Year 1/2

Literacy
In Literacy, students have begun their non-fiction unit. Students have been learning the difference between fiction and non-fiction, and the features within both to tell the difference. Students will explore activating prior knowledge about texts before reading and develop questions to support comprehension. They will also work on summarising information they have read, and synthesising, by collecting information from multiple sources. This will lead to students creating their own non-fiction text, about a topic later in the term.
1/2's learnt how to collect information from a direct source. This was during our incursion about sea creatures. Students learnt all about many sea creatures, we can't wait to apply this knowledge in our information text unit!
Maths
In Maths, students have just completed their Multiplication unit where they practised repeated addition, grouping with counters, drawing to represent multiplication sums, making arrays and making bar models. We are so proud of the growth made across a few short weeks!
Currently, students are exploring the concept of division with the help of materials and drawings. They have been unpacking increasingly challenging worded problems. Keep up the great work 1/2s!
Humanities
Over the past few weeks we have continued our unit into change over time, with a focus on communities, families and personal lives. This week the children enjoyed exploring the text 'Window' by Jeannie Baker. They discussed each picture (two years on from the last) and identified the changes that had occurred and why. We explored questions such as: What changes can you see? Why do you think this change has occurred? What are the positive impacts of this change? What are the negative impacts of this change? The children enjoyed drawing pictures of this - and had a go at drawing what they think their window might look like 100 years from now.

Students read all of the nominated books throughout the week, which explored many important themes and messages. Students looked amazing on Friday for the dress-up day. Thank you to all families for putting in such a great effort to the amazing costumes.
Think you know Bullying talk
On Tuesday 26th, all of the 1/2 students combined to speak to a constable in Geelong about Bullying. Students learnt what a bully is and what to do if they are experiencing it or witnessing it. Students listened so intently and had some wonderful questions which were answered by the constable.
